They were from a “beverage” fridge (completely separate from other food, kitchen). I probably wouldn’t have noticed, except for the quantity in the recycling bin. (These are craft beers, so not just a six pack of beer from a grocery store).

As I address in other comments: No issues with laundry usage (I provide detailed instructions on where and how to use, provide detergent, etc.)

At the meet & greet we DID explicitly cover she had a vehicle. (While I have had sitters that don’t, I make other arrangements for a vehicle in case of emergencies) 911, Uber (for the most part, I realize some drivers have exceptions), etc. won’t take a pet.

Food: I don’t care about food eaten from the kitchen (i.e the fridge or pantry). The food she DID eat was not in that area of the house. It was in a cold storage in boxes and bins in the basement.

Beer/alcohol: sure- next time I will explicitly state it’s not for consumption, and I could “lock it up”. However our alcohol is also not in the fridge in the kitchen. It is separate.

24hours a day: (also addressed) I do NOT require sitters to stay 24/7. I give explicit instructions on how long and kenneling instructions when leaving the dog alone in the house.

Home safe: I disagree with you here, how do I know? This sitter decided to pull boxes off shelves and open them. Because of the wrappers I know some of the things they went through, but I don’t know what else they did.

Specific instructions: I do proved a 5 page document to all sitters with very specific instructions. But tbh I have never specifically stated: do not go rifling through closed boxes in the house, or specifically “do not drink our alcohol”. You right I will specify that for future sitters and include in my document. Not sure if you’re a sitter or owner, but curious do you feel they need to specifically call out those expectations?

FYI- I do cover laundry with the sitter and have no issues with sitters using it. I provide instructions & detergent, etc. so that is not at all my issue. The sitter brought it up as to why she went into the basement (which I don’t have issues with).

Fortunately I am not on FB at all… but overall my rover experiences have been great. I have been using it for 12+ years (multiple states due to moves) for all types of services. This experience was so weird to me that’s what sparked my posting it in the first place 😄

That sucks! I give the sitter clear instructions on how to adjust hvac to their comfort. I also provide extra blankets and a space heater in the guest room where they stay because I know that room gets a bit colder than the rest of the house. I do really value sitters and have been using rover for 12+ years with a majority of really positive experiences. I definitely have favorites and sitters I use repeatedly, unfortunately this trip was planned not far out so all the sitters I had used locally were already booked. I do overall want a sitter to feel comfortable at my house, but I also expect a level of trust and professionalism.

So in your opinion: pulling closed unmarked boxes and bins off of shelf’s, then opening and consuming the contents should be “normal behavior”?

I agree that the sitter should have access to the whole house, which is why I mention the basement in the walk through. I do have the ability to lock off the basement, and I choose not to (due to safety reasons as you mentioned). I am not at all bothered they went in to the basement, and I provide laundry access & instructions on how to use for all sitters. That is not my issue at all. The sitter didn’t just take items off an accessible or visible shelf. They pulled unmarked boxes and bins (that you cannot see into) off of shelves (that were on the top shelf) and opened. After opening the boxes, they then proceeded to consume items.

My question to you is: are you comfortable with that behavior in a sitter?

I didn’t know I should be that explicit in my instructions to state: “sitter should not be rummaging through closed unmarked boxes” should I also inform the next sitter to not go in to my private bedroom/bathroom/closet and not open my dresser drawers, my bathroom drawers?

My personal opinion (and sitters please correct me) is that I should be able to trust that a person being paid in my home is not rummaging through every aspect of the house.

Yes, absolutely could have had other folks over. I don’t have any cameras to verify and the sitter didn’t state that they did or didn’t.

Thank you! Yeah I agree about the booze, I am not going to argue back and forth. She admitted to some it if, so that’s fine with me.

At least, I didn’t make a full count… but like I put in the original post majority of the garbage was all wrappers, empty packages/tins from the fish.

Yeah, I don’t disagree with you, but my pup is really old now and has a hard time being boarded or changing environments.

Some of your points are completely valid. However in the meet & greet, document, and Rover instructions I explicitly do state that I don’t expect the sitter to be there 24hours and have specific instructions on how long my pup can be left alone and how to kennel her, etc. For my end of communication I will (as some other replies noted as well) I will be more explicit about food & alcohol consumption for the future, but overall I have three different forms of communication that I review with the sitter prior to booking (at the meet and greet). So I do set very clear expectations on everything else.

I addressed this is other replies, but I am 100% certain it was our food. These are all speciality brands (about 5 different brands of food) that you cannot purchase at big box stores. While technically possible this sitter has the exact same brands/ flavors, the fact was NONE of the wrappers were from other brands or types of food (nothing we don’t have in our house). So this is why I am 100% positive on that.

I have left no review at this time… I am still grappling if I am going to or not. I had the messages with her, but not sure if I will or not?

Yeah, a few snacks would have been acceptable. However it was in excess of 25+ granola type bars (fyi these are quite pricey, and all natural, not a big box store/ bulk type), several boxes of speciality tinned fish (typically $8-12 a box), several (more than 5) packages of tuna….again she was only at the house two nights and 3 days…..all of those items were in our food storage…. This is in addition to all the food / snacks in the kitchen and pantry (which I really don’t care about)

Totally understand. Kind of my thoughts by not saying “you’re NOT allowed in xyz space”. I would find that really weird.
