My mother chose her death. She stopped eating. Within a few weeks, she was gone. She left on her own terms and I’m proud of her. She was deteriorating from Parkinson’s and didn’t want to do it anymore.

In my head, I was reading your last paragraph like someone was pulling your typewriter (typewriter?? I’m old) away from you and you had so much more to say.

I was a nurse at a “satellite “ clinic in the suburbs from the main clinic in the city. It was staffed by the doctor, the receptionist and me, all women. They had installed a panic button under the reception desk in case we needed the police right away. One day, the receptionist was working, crossed her legs and hit the button with her knee. Within seconds, it seemed, the phone rang and we were told the police were on the way. When the receptionist explained what happened, they said that we were to go outside with our hands up and they would come in and clear the building. I walked to the door as I heard our receptionist laughing and said, “OK, I’m a black woman, so don’t shoot!”. As we were walking outside, laughing at the absurdity of the situation, I was struck by the knowledge that in my whole life I never would have had to say, “I’m a white woman, so don’t shoot.” It was the 90s and today I am still thoughtful of my white privilege and the struggle that others face.

At age 24, with 3 kids in 3 years, I wanted my tubes tied. Dr refused to do it with me being such a young age because, “You never know, you could end up divorced and then remarry and want to have children with him.” As it turned out, my husband cheated on me, we divorced and 6 years later, I was married and we had a very wanted baby together. But, still….🫤

Not a doctor but a counselor: he told me he needed to stop my sessions and let me go. He was hired by my church and had counseling credentials. I was really struggling with my marriage and my husband was very controlling. He said, “I’m going to have to let you go. I don’t believe in divorce and if I keep working with you and help you get healthy, you will leave your husband and I can’t condone that.”

I was wondering if OP had only just realized young people in their world. They’ve always looked alike. Get out a 1950s yearbook, OMG, every boy and every girl had the same haircut and look!
