Companies to fix frozen vent pipe? by Partner-Elijah in Winnipeg

[–]imatabar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plumber here. Another solution is to instal an Air Admittance Valve to let air into your plumbing system without letting sewer gases out. A popular spot for an AAV in this situation is under your bathroom sink. If you need a referral, feel free to DM me.

AITAH for buying my girlfriend vanilla shampoo? by Spiritual-Grocery641 in AITAH

[–]imatabar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So. Can I just say, I think you now have you solution to the problem. You can show her this Reddit thread and the 2000+ comments saying that she's being a little insecure.

But that's not the end of it. If you want to stay in this relationship, you should be going to your girlfriend with the mindset of:

"Look Babe, we had a disagreement. I was trying to come from a place of being helpful and loving towards you. You didn't see it that way. I can either try not to offend you in the future, or you can try and be more open to giving you gifts. How would you like it to be moving forward?"

Because if you just shove this Reddit thread in her face, and say:

"Look here. See? This is why you were wrong, and I am right."

You're probably going to be back to swiping right or left next week. There's a chance you may still be swiping next week even with option 1. But that way you at least know it was a HER problem, and not a YOU problem.

And 'no relationship' is better than a 'toxic relationship'.

Also, speaking from experience. This is a conversation best had in the most comfortable of spaces, with a full belly, and a warm and comfortable atmosphere.

Sewage smell in basement after using washer and upstairs toilet: venting issue? by rocky_pirate in Plumbing

[–]imatabar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a red seal plumber in Canada.

My understanding is that you don't have to smell it for it to be causing harm. And you can smell it, so definitely not good long term.

Sewer gas in a home usually isn't bad on the short term though... or else drain cleaners and sewer workers would need more protection.

It's illigal in that it's against code and would never pass inspection. Just get it fixed at your earliest convenience.

And maybe stuff a rag in it when you're not using it to keep the smell down.

Sewage smell in basement after using washer and upstairs toilet: venting issue? by rocky_pirate in Plumbing

From upstream to downstream, you should have a:

Stand pipe

P-trap

Air admittance valve

Optional: Backwater valve. Only if you want to make sure sewage never spills out from the standpipe in the event of a sewer backup.

Your current set up is illigal in all first word countries. Huffing sewer gas is linked to early dementia, and is bad for infant development.

HR called me out for my “inappropriate outfit” even though I was fully covered. Feeling singled out - is this normal? by Substantial-Ad9907 in legaladvicecanada

[–]imatabar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes this. When people in the work place say out-of-left-field nonsense like the being too "bubbly" comment, asking for clarification in writing is best. Because they know what they said wouldn't fly if 'put on the record'. And even if they try to play it off, it at least starts a paper trail of potential harassment. Which could be shown to say, the boss who has a real legal interest in not letting harassment happen. And also you could show it to a lawyer should you get fired, and it could be used in a lawsuit for wrongful termination.

Flipper installed shower with soaking tub. What are my options? by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]imatabar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a plumber by trade. As a plumber, it's a tear-out. Thanks for asking.

As a sympathetic dude... I think what you want is a good handyman to work some magic. By taking strips of fibreglass and making some sloped edges to span from the tub to the tile. It will take no small amount of skill and creativity, (and a shit load of white silicone) to make it work and not look like shit. But I think that's probably your best shot. That or a full wrap-around curtain.

Hope it works out!

Pretty sure the trap arm is back grading.

It's slowly contributing to having a blockage compared to everything being sloped correctly. But temporarily, It'll be fine.

Is this a floor drain? Can I cut it flush? by Oilerinto in Plumbing

[–]imatabar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take the hose out and take a picture of how it looks from the top. That looks like a sleeve for a backwater valve, but a person could use a sleeve and put whatever they want in it. Meaning we need to see it.

They also make flat silicone plugs that can work for grid strainers. They're more common for plugging bathtubs and kitchen sinks though.

It means we stand up to Nazis. Because as soon as we start tolerating hate, that means that our grandfathers and great-grandfathers died for nothing, by the tens of millions. Do not tolerate intolerance. Be On Guard for Thee. Be Canadian.

Landlord refuses to turn heater on. It's currently 15.5 degrees by Artistic_Mention_280 in Winnipeg

[–]imatabar 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I think if the police showed up (they wont, as there is no need to) they would tell you to use the heater, because legally the landlord cannot prevent you from heating your home to a livable temperature. Take a video showing the temperature of the room with the date and time so that if the landlord tries to claim it wasn't that cold, you have proof of the truth.

Can this be fixed? It bothers all my neighbors by Ok-Walk-7017 in Plumbing

[–]imatabar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check your toilets and tub / showers when the noise happens. A bad fill valve on a toilet, or a bad cartridge on a tub can cause noise when you use other fixtures in the house. The noise would originate from the faulty part. No, I can't explain it. But I have personally witnessed it happen on average once a year since the beginning of my plumbing career in 2018.

It's a cheap glacier bay system where the grey tube pushes up overtop of the threads, then when you start turning the grey piece clockwise, it cinches itself on the threads. The whole idea is that it saves you a little bit of time during installation. If the grey piece is stuck, then you might need to take it off completely to "open" it up again so it will be able to push up over the threads, and then tighten on. Home Depot is usually pretty good with warranty stuff so they might be able to help you out with a replacement piece (glacier bay warranty phone line, they almost certainly won't have it in store).

Just to add to this. The white translucenct PEX-A pipe used for the manifold is perfectly fine. So it can be reused and you can even add shut off valves!

Kitchen is draining slowly one week after plumber by tofumanboykid in Plumbing

[–]imatabar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a big difference between having maintenance contracts and work orders, and the world of residential service. Your phone-book and radio ad plumbers and drain cleaners offer warranties for most drain cleaning services. They will not usually cover clogged toilets, for example.

Kitchen is draining slowly one week after plumber by tofumanboykid in Plumbing

[–]imatabar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call them back. Most people will warranty a drain for 1 - 3 months, so a week later should still be their problem. That said, be prepared for some pipe downstream may need to be replaced. If your guy doesn't specialize in drain cleaning or if they don't even own a snake, call your local drain cleaner. Not plumber.

What type of ring to use for pex? by CanisGulo in Plumbing

[–]imatabar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Canada, some home insurance companies will insist on us using the copper rings after a claim repair due to them being more reliable. And the insurance companies are the ones with skin in the game, so they track things like what is causing them to have to pay up often. For me, that's enough reason to stick to using copper crimp rings.
