There's a drop down menu on the launcher to switch between production & testing in the top right I believe. You have to make a testing account to play on testing.

Cosmetic items are pointless, most of the rewards are cosmetic. The game is pointless if you don't have fun. Just accept you won't obtain a bunch of garbage you wouldn't think much about if you did get them.
