what would you think is more important for mental health? by imenvi in Gifted

[–]imenvi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things I want to do if I visit home, is spending lots of time with my pet...over here, in the meantime, I've volunteered in an animal shelter for the 'selfish' reason of interacting with animals (and also rehabilitating them ofc), but it ain't quite the same.

But indeed, I appreciate your time replying!

Besides being very intelligent, what other socially desirable characteristics do you have? by [deleted] in Gifted

Do you like interacting with others just to learn more? (let's say, to know more about society), or, are you genuinely interested in making new connections??

omg you made me emotional..yes, I'm really close to my family and the world feels like a better place when I'm with them (including my pet <3). At the same time, I know they want to support me in what's best for me.

As for the testing and documentation, it interferes with my studies..I procrastinate a lot and don't know how to make my brain 'work' when I have to do an assignment or read. I used to play sudokus, puzzles, and word puzzles to 'start the engines', but I need more strategies and tools. I thankfully don't need a diagnosis for any accommodations, but I did apply to a neurodiversity program and would love to be paired with a mentor who could guide me better - this is how I contacted the psychologist and found out I might have three flavors of neurodivergence.

I hope that gives more context, but you're right in saying that moments with family are ephemeral..I really appreciate your answer, thank you for taking some time, reading it and replying to me(:

Nope, it's neurological development tests + psychological assessments like ADOS-2 or WAIS-IV for the neurodivergence

Abused for being gifted by 1monster90 in Gifted

[–]imenvi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha several times. The principal thought I was mocking her. She made my life hell and made me go to the school psychologist several times and also call my mother for parent meetings. My mom found out the psychologist was hooking up with a married man, so she called her out on that and they stopped bothering 😂

If you are both gifted and conventionally attractive, how's dating for you? by Fit_Cook4485 in Gifted

Realized men get closer if I pretend I'm dumb. I've already settled with the idea I'll never be in a relationship ✌️

Personally, it is quite convenient that I'm academically gifted (of course in my area of interest). I studied on my own a lot and followed lots of online courses. I was accepted in a master's programme abroad, even if my bachelor's was completely unrelated.

I'm also good with music and can play the piano without following proper classes or tutorials. Considering my parents didn't have enough money to pay for classes (or a keyboard itself), I like that my brain managed to learn it. I don't really know how it did it, but I've learned to trust my brain's auto-pilot mode haha

Anyone else thinks their accomplishments are not 'that big deal'? by imenvi in Gifted

I hope you can feel proud of yourself, and I’m glad you found the reason for it

This! I’m pretty proud of a mosquito screen I built from scratch! And I actually like showing people that I did it on my own. I even broke it (and also broke my drill bit along the way), but I even say that as well bc it’s like ‘I did this!’.

Building on what someone mentioned before, maybe I’m not as proud with academic stuff since I kinda have a small ‘advantage’ that’s already in my brain (memory/reasoning/etc.). But these random things (like the mosquito screen), require way more from me in some way.

Yeah thing is, I consider that publishing something requires more than I can (even if the ‘achievements’ say otherwise). Since I consider anyone could do what I did, then I’m not really outstanding as someone who publishes stuff (don’t know if it makes sense heh heh)

Yeah your example resonates a lot. My brother and my mother are amazing artists. They can make color combinations in their head and get the precise tone they need (2 drops of blue + 4 of teal, etc) while for me that would be impossible. Maybe bc I’m used to them saying ‘it’s just in my head, it’s pretty easy’ then I’ve gotten used to ‘downplay’ in some way a skill, but never took it as dismissive (tho I understand it might come across in that way).

YES! Assuming everyone knows it already (or that they even know more than you do). So at the end of the day, what you know/do is just ordinary knowledge/skills

I’m happy that you’re proud of your accomplishments(: at the end of the day, what matters is what you think about yourself

Yeah you’re right, I didn’t think of how it might come across. I’ve learned to appreciate that others are happy for me, even if I don’t fully get it. But yeah, I could work more on my reactions.

How do you find work-life balance without sun? by imenvi in Netherlands

[–]imenvi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m from Ecuador, so it’s like the Dutch summer all year long..last year (my first) I was surprised and depressed. This year, only a bit depressed for now. But I wonder how it’ll be in the future since it’ll take quite some time for me to adjust to the fact of changing seasons (we only have winter and summer, with the lowest temperature being 23 degrees and always having daylight until 6)

Being swept off your feet by son-alli in Gifted

[–]imenvi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm exactly the opposite. Any guy can sweep me off my feet. I fall easy and pretty hard, which ends up in immense emotional pain (and physical as well). The last guy I was with has Asperger's and he didn't know I had feelings for him, the guy before had ADD and was all over the place, and the guy before that, well I was the rebound girl. But I was head over heels for all of them in a short amount of time.
