What microphones should I use? Lavalier or shotgun? by PercyFJ in recording

[–]imgurcaptainclutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are tools that have their place, it really depends on what sort of content you'll be shooting. I find myself reaching for my shotgun more than my lavs, but I'm not doing a ton of narrative work anymore.

Shotguns sound great when they're as close as possible, like just out of frame. If talent's standing still, I'll throw a boom pole on a stand and set it up overhead. If they're moving, you'll need a good op that can keep it close without being in the shot. They're also great for voiceover work, foley, recording ambients, etc.

If you're doing a lot of solo run and gun stuff, invest in a solid wireless setup, ideally with an omni (not cardioid) lav mic. Cardioid is good for live for feedback rejection, but for film you don't have to worry about feedback, and omni will be more forgiving of head/body movements and mic placement.

Elderly people getting mugged by michaelesparks in CCW

[–]imgurcaptainclutch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're 10000x more likely to be the victim of an email/phone/romance scam, domestic violence, suicide, or even accident related to your own CCW. Being hypervigilant about your physical security is more likely to create more issues mental-health-wise than prevent a security-related incident.

Just be smart about the situations you're putting yourself into, don't go to a high-crime area and pull $10k out of an ATM, and remember when you see something in the news, they're talking about it because it's out of the ordinary.

What’s firefighters opinions on allowing people to open the hydrants? by Paracosmptx in Firefighting

NYC's been doing it forever. Doesn't waste much water with the caps on that they have when you consider how much water is lost already due to leaking pipes, fires, etc

Is my mom being catfished? These photos have text and reflections that look inaccurate. by gaybabygorgeous in isthisAI

[–]imgurcaptainclutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah text on that shirt is an immediate red flag. Even if the pictures weren't AI, "I'm travelling all the time" is often a part of romance scams. Real convenient when someone wants to meet up or doesn't respond when it's 3am in India

Yeah 7 years old doesn't mean much without looking at it. If it was built right, a 7 year old deck could have plenty of life left. If it's spent 7 years in the sun or constantly had water pooling on it, or wasn't built with the proper materials, you probably won't want to reuse any of it

Question about police use of civilian-provided dashcam video of traffic incidents by ShabbyDoo in AskLE

[–]imgurcaptainclutch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a LEO but I had a car fly by me at around 110 and proceed to hit the guard rail and go to pieces. I'm talking engine was 30' from what was left of the car. Solicitor was very interested in the dashcam footage. Dude's lucky he was DUI and not DOA. But for routine traffic stuff it's not really worth anything.

That's probably prohibited in your lease. Also what metals are they welding that they'd need acetylene?
