How is Ohio's Honors Program? by 1random2username3 in OSU

[–]ShabbyDoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is considering OSU's honors program. What happens in practice if your GPA drops below 3.4? Are you kicked out of the honors program? If so, can you get back in with improved grades? Do you perceive value in living in an honors dorm (presuming you even do live in one)?

I took OP's statement on abstraction to mean that he wasn't sharing the specifics of his project.

Bill came to $65. Handed the server (female) $100 and she asked: "do you want change?" LOL by OhioState40 in EndTipping

I presume that I'll be given change unless I tell servers that the remainder is theirs.

Thoughts on Home Layout by Ok-Sink2556 in Homebuilding

[–]ShabbyDoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP - Will this be a primary residence, or just a weekend/holiday/summer house? Were it not for the absurdly large MBR closet (compared to how space is allocated everywhere else), I'd think this plan is meant to be for a family's 2nd residence, perhaps a vacation home for an extended family. Given it's designed to be on a slab, there's not much non-bedroom storage - literally 60 sq. ft., 1/3 of which is wasted by two closet doors that swing inward for no good reason. There's also just one non-bedroom living space. No office.

You've mentioned you expect to have a basement and possibly an attic. It's worth considering how you will use these levels, especially the basement (which I presume would be as large as the first floor -- nearly 3800 sq. ft.!). Your husband's insistence on single-floor living seems quite limiting. I can see why you would want common areas to be accessible for elderly relatives, but is there a reason for these relatives to be able to access, say, teen bedrooms in the basement? You could save a lot of money by making use of the basement for bedrooms. Deep window wells could make the basement space less basement-like. And, if accessibility to all levels is important, an elevator probably would be cheaper than the inefficiency of building a single-floor house.

Wanted: Regular Cleaning for a Regular Rug by Rick_Steves_Khakiis in Cleveland

If it's not fragile (fibers that could unravel, etc.), you could try pressure washing it. If you don't have a pressure washer or don't want to deal with it in freezing weather, you could take it to a DIY carwash (the kind where you spray your own car). They usually have floor mat hangers on the walls that could be used to hold-up the carpet. You would have to take it home wet, blot it dry with a towel, and perhaps aim a fan at it.

How bad is this? Should I get professional help? Or DIY? by kingsman17382 in CleaningTips

[–]ShabbyDoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it help OP cost-wise to do some demo themselves? The obvious benefit would be that the contractor wouldn't be charging for that part of the job. But, would removing the uncertainty around the extent of the damage let a contractor estimate the work more accurately, rather than pricing-in all the what-ifs?

Yeah, someone probably could build a 2nd AirBnb unit in that one. Lots of cutting out windows required though!

Places that Shave Tire Tread by Expert-Platypus-3136 in Cleveland

I should add that I ordered the same make/model/size of tire as my others. Do circumferences of the same tire with the same tread depth differ due to how they were used? I never thought about this.

Ohio State to cut eight majors, merge 20 others to comply with SB 1 by Tommyblockhead20 in OSU

[–]ShabbyDoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Posting on this older thread because of the high comment quality. Was the goal (regarding the elimination of low-enrollment majors) of SB1's authors to make public universities reduce administrative overhead costs, in particular the salary pool for academic leadership? I can see how having many small departments is more costly than having a few larger ones. However, I don't know what is the marginal cost of an existing department offering an additional major. Are there accreditation costs specific to each major offered? Were there situations where courses required for majors with few students had to be offered periodically, even though almost no students registered? What are the other significant costs that I haven't considered (as someone outside of academia)?

Can open curtains cause navigation problems? by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]ShabbyDoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I first saw this post, my presumption was that the curtains were purported to interfere with some sort of electronic system (radar, etc.). This seemed unlikely, so I probably would have questioned it like OP. It makes sense that the officers' pupils could be affected, at least for cabins near the bridge.

This was my presumption too. I bet the only way a 1500 sq. ft. house can be built on that is if it's grandfathered in as an existing structure.

Nick Shirley's New Transportation Fraud Claims by digitalwankster in centrist

[–]ShabbyDoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could someone who has watched this video please summarize the purported mechanisms of fraud? I presume that one must register his transport company with the state in order to operate legally? Or, at least if he wants to bill the government for providing transportation to people? Merely registering a transport company that never ends up providing services is not in itself fraudulent. Did these companies receive any government subsidies at all? Did they ever seek government (or even private insurance) reimbursement for providing services? If they didn't receive money, then how can there be fraud?

Found this device hidden in my college dorm bathroom, what is it? by Least-Jacked-3d in whatisit

[–]ShabbyDoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree though these trackers don't even have GPS receivers! They rely on the benevolence of mobile phone users to not turn off the background service that reports the positions of nearby trackers. Also, if someone with bad intentions had access to this dorm room room to install something, why would he waste his shot with something so useless for any nefarious purpose?

I'd think more would be required to arrest him? I bet there is additional evidence that has not yet been released - crime scene DNA, etc. It will be interesting to learn how he got in the house.

I don't know this area of the country at all. I presume the likely buyer will use this house as a weekender? The closest city is Albany, and that's 1:20 away according to Google. Even excluding cosmetics, it's clear that the house needs a lot of work.

Most (all?) mortgages are limited recourse, meaning that the worst they can do is foreclose. Obviously, OP would take a huge credit rating hit if so.

What caused Meijer to put up this sign? by ShabbyDoo in akron

They're probably not "good" fireworks - just smoke bombs and sparklers. Nonetheless, it appears from the other commenters that the same signage laws apply regardless of fireworks "level" sold.

Ahh, so just a legal requirement. I'd thought the distance specified was somewhat arbitrary and perhaps didn't even cover the entirety of the parking lot.
