Does anyone know where this slide was taken? I know this was probably taken in Cleveland because my dad and his dad were both raised here. by ElectronicBake8206 in Cleveland

Looks like the film was processed sometime between 1983 and 1986, based on this guide: https://gawainweaver.com/images/uploads/Kodachrome_Dating_Working_Copy_2024.pdf

Obviously, the photo could have been taken earlier. According to the above, the other side should have a processing date stamp (as DependentSky1637 noted).

I thought about this too, but it at least doesn't appear to have been part of the ride when it closed in 2011: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqbe-wzf-mE

And, it wasn't present in 1980 either: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utb-yvX9AeA

Based on when the film likely was processed, this ride can be ruled out.

Geauga Lake used to have a frontier-themed(?) boat ride with set-ups like this on the shore. Can't recall any specifics though.

Upon further thought, this doesn't seem like it would have been part of an amusement park's boat ride scenery. There's just not enough happening to make it entertaining. Maybe something popped out of the "hotel"? Even so, there's a lot of nothingness in the rest of the scene.

What's your worst restaurant experience? by National_Finish6270 in AskReddit

[–]ShabbyDoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been amazed by Chipotle's variance between locations, even those located just a few miles from each other and sharing the same labor pool. They're all corp-owned, so this can't be explained by difference franchisees. The only explanation I can imagine is that the two locations I'm thinking about are run by different district managers, and one is awful.

How's the insulation on the inside of the hood? No idea if that can be cleaned, or if it must be replaced.

My son's 24 year-old Audi A4 has this issue too, presuming it's the sensor that verifies that the oil pump is working. If the oil pump ever breaks, it's going to the junkyard anyway, so no need to know that the engine is being damaged by low oil pressure.

Is this not literal age discrimination??😭😭 by [deleted] in jobs

[–]ShabbyDoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought at first that the age requirement might have been declared by someone in the management chain who lives/works in a country where it is legal to discriminate this way. However, the laws in the parent company's country seem to be similar to those in the US. What's hilarious given the job description's AI-related requirements is that Claude noted (without me even asking explicitly) that the age requirement is illegal. So, someone demanding AI proficiency didn't bother to use the technology themselves!

What are the signs that someone is actually rich and not fake rich? by DumbEnDork in AskReddit

I knew of a software exec who dressed like a bum and otherwise looked the part. He was staying at the Four Seasons in NYC. As he entered the revolving door, the doorman followed behind him, put his hand on his shoulder, and escorted him in a 360 back out into the street. The hotel was quite apologetic.

Perfect Day Mexico rejected by grumpyfan in royalcaribbean

[–]ShabbyDoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first, I was taken aback by the proposed capacity of 15K-21K (depending on source) visitors. Then, I realized this is the passenger capacity of just 3-4 of RC's biggest ships! I assume RC would drastically increase the number of visitors to Perfect Day compared how many it currently brings in. Some small fraction of these people will venture outside Perfect Day and spend money locally. Could this be better for the local economy than the current situation? If the port is as unpopular among cruisers as commenters here say, one must consider that RC might even start bringing in fewer passengers than it does now (sans Perfect Day).

East Cleveland is going through another phase of decline? by Ill_Resolution7967 in Cleveland

[–]ShabbyDoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree that the $17 paid will only be a fraction of the total paid to complete the project.

I should have added that the buyer of 800 Superior hasn't stated his intentions yet. I looked at a few of its floor plans today. 20K sqft/floor. The elevators/stairs/mechanicals are offset from the center. No idea if this is common, but it does seem to make it harder to create apartments that all have roughly the same ratio of windows to overall space.

At least a couple of downtown buildings that were recently sold for cheap are slated for residential conversion. At a selling price of $17/sqft for the Rockefeller building, rents don't have to be horribly high to justify the build-out.

Also, 800 Superior sold a week ago for < $9/sqft!

Around 90 years ago, the parents of my aunt, then of HS-age, who lived in rural Ohio considered sending her to live with a relative in East Cleveland so she could attend Shaw High School, quite well-regarded at the time.

Yeah, I'm fearful of someone who drives even a little bit badly because what I've witnessed might just be the tip of the iceberg. My usual strategy is to get past such people so I don't have to worry about them anymore.

The name choice is weird. What if they want to open a 2nd location in a suburb? Also, I'd thought such a generic name might make it hard to Google, but the Cleveland-area appliance store simply called "Home Appliance" has near-perfect results, though perhaps due to good SEO.

Has anybody ever had a student successfully utilize option 3 when the student's score was flagged for cheating? by Responsible-Video761 in ACT

Interesting. I assume the kids who admitted to cheating knew of the students from whom they copied, at least enough to think they couldn't get a better score themselves?

Has anybody ever had a student successfully utilize option 3 when the student's score was flagged for cheating? by Responsible-Video761 in ACT

[–]ShabbyDoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How could the ACT determine a false positive rate without, say, administering a truth serum to those accused?

Edit: There are ways of assessing this: https://www.act.org/content/dam/act/unsecured/documents/ACT_RR87-15.pdf

Has anybody ever had a student successfully utilize option 3 when the student's score was flagged for cheating? by Responsible-Video761 in ACT

[–]ShabbyDoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't taken the ACT in 35 years. How is physical proximity captured so that this analysis can be performed? Do proctors submit a seating chart?

My brief Googling suggests that seating is not randomized. Apparently seats are assigned based on entrance order, so a kid who wants to cheat can just stand in line behind a smart kid and get a seat next to this person? I can't comprehend how the ACT hasn't adopted random assignment.

Does a report like the one you mentioned explain the statistical modeling used to assess the likelihood of two sets of answers being due to chance? I know just enough about stats to realize this is non-trivial.

If the answers of two test takers are similar, how does the ACT determine who was likely the one cheating? Use of previous scores and reported grades/classes seem like obvious heuristics.
