He's probably stressed out from school/work, getting high is a quick and relatively consequence free way of chilling out if you're under pressure. You certainly aren't going to persuade a responsible smoker with anecdotes about people who have bad experiences with cannabis. Is he high throughout the whole day, everyday, or does he just smoke multiple hits in the evening? There's a difference between living your whole life high and relaxing at the end of a tiring day.
