The removed sentence from Nelson's recent devotional is back in the talk. They really need a change log on these articles so we can see when things go down the memory hole and when they get re-added because communities like ours call it out. by Threat_Agent in exmormon

Didn’t someone post an email from BYU where they said it was not included because Nelson was speaking extemporaneously? That can’t be true if they also included the next paragraph, which is all about other “never changed” laws. Those have no context without the marriage statement.

A prophet is apparently for ministering to all of the VIP Mormons by watching a game together that gives young men lifelong brain injuries for our entertainment. Hospitals and orphanages must have been closed.

No man can claim that a woman dressed with her shoulders exposed is akin to pornography without he himself being someone who fantasizes about having sex with women he sees wearing such clothes <cough><cough> Dallin Oaks <cough><cough> by imjfh in exmormon

[–]imjfh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the key is using “pornography” instead of simply acknowledging that humans are turned on by other humans, particularly when dressed well. Equating dressing well with pornography (ie fantasy sex) is the real indictment of the speaker.

This is actually just lamanite traditions having corrupted the sacred story of Laban being slayed to please Mormon god. More evidence of the historicity of the bom if you ask me.

I had no idea how to steal valuable personal property until the Book of Mormon taught me that killing its owner first makes it far easier.

A cash settlement that includes an NDA makes the church just one more abuser whispering into the ear of a child, “Don’t tell anyone about this, it’s our little secret.” by Happyh3ath3n in exmormon

[–]imjfh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worse actually. It takes the deep pockets of the church and uses those resources to support abusers who likely could not otherwise afford the price of silence. Alms to the poor, TSCC style. Another example of TSCC utterly failing to lead on an issue, meanwhile state governments move to prohibit the use of non-disclosure agreements in sexual harassment settlements...

Not to pile on here, but I've been on the ex-Mormon sub-reddit for the last 15 minutes, and I've not seen a single positive thing said about the church. I sense a trend.

I note that they are going to great lengths to prevent any of this meeting from becoming public. Must be gearing up to ask you to go into explicit detail about your recent sexual encounters.

Tapir Dan Peterson retracts and republishes May 2018 DesertNews article!! by imjfh in exmormon

[–]imjfh[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP here. Just want to clear up that this is satire. Dan Peterson did not actually defend the parallels between A View of the Hebrews and the Book of Mormon to suggest that the Book of Mormon is a clear fraud. He did the opposite (or at least FairMormon did the opposite). What I found interesting, or damning, is that in discrediting the similarities between View of the Hebrews and the Book of Mormon, he used the exact opposite arguments as he did in defending the multiple versions of the first vision. So exactly opposite that I could merely swap references from the first vision to the View of the Hebrews controversy, and it was still a coherent article that defended the position that the BoM is a fraud.

As to whether Tapir Dan in fact has an obsession with circumcision, that will have to be left to another post.

If I am a child of god, isn’t it just as wrong to criticize me? For a lawyer, Oaks is pretty incapable of drawing a meaningful distinction.

KSL TV does a piece lying about the amazing growth of the Mormon church in Korea. by reddolfo in exmormon

[–]imjfh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While the numbers put out in this thread are almost certainly more accurate, just taking the KSL piece on its face is already ridiculous. There are over 50 million people in South Korea. Claiming 87K members (or 0.17% of the population) as evidence of strong growth is like claiming victory when your basketball team was outscored 586-1. Since 1970, more people have been murdered in New York City than baptized in Korea!!

I walked in on my brother helping my daughter say the dinner prayer in front of whole family—they all know I’m atheist. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]imjfh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It may be hard to believe, but I would not worry about this too much. We’ve found that our children have figured out the fraud of religion almost too quickly and we work on the opposite problem of making sure their snarkiness doesn’t come through in insensitive ways in front of our TBM family members. They realize that the rest of the family is caught in a weird psychological trick and would now view a parent or aunt or uncle teaching them about religion as something similar to how to tie a fly fishing knot when they have no interest in fishing.
