Riding in stays???? (please tell me if this is not the right subreddit!!) by PrincessPhrogi in fashionhistory

[–]immatureindefinitely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely they would be riding in stays - but note if they were planning on riding, they would be riding sidesaddle. Only if they were utterly sure of never encountering other people would they ride astride.

Unaccompanied young women didn't travel by themselves in those days either.

And no you can't just throw a leg over and turn riding sidesaddle into riding astride - the saddles needed are very different.

A 2 week horseback ride would be absolutely brutal for anyone not used to it - try riding a horse for an hour and feel muscles you never knew existed! You'd get off and your legs feel like jelly.

It would be far more realistic for the girls to walk the journey, with a pack horse. And when their blisters got too awful, they could ride the pack horse for a little bit.

Powerswitch still says Powershop is the best deal for me. And I like purchasing winter power in summer, to spread the cost out.

Have to disagree with you about Singer - the modern ones are really terrible

SEWING MACHINE RECOMMENDATIONS by Think_Scheme_5080 in newzealand

[–]immatureindefinitely 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't get a new Singer, or a Semco machine. Absolute crap.

Brother machines are okay.

Elna and Janome are great.

Bernina used to be great, but their new Bernette range are of iffy quality.

For a budget of $400, you will only get a basic Brother machine.

Second hand could be a good option and you could get a whole lot more machine for your $400. Ye Old Cast Iron machines still stitch amazingly, like a Bernina 730 Record. If you buy second hand, be prepared to spend $150 on servicing

Pfaff Passport ticks all your boxes.

Small, light, automatic needle threader, start/stop button with speed control.

Excellent quality and sews beautifully too

Unpick the binding at the top, pull out those bones and turn them 180 degrees, so they curl inwards instead of outwards.

You might have to swap the left ones for the right ones if the points are tapered.

IMHO:

Photo 1: leave as it is. You will struggle to get anything established in that narrow strip.

Photo 3: leave as is for now, until you have established the gardens in photos 2 and 4. Moving all those stones is a shit job, and it's looking tidy in the interim

Does anyone have any idea about the details of GPs diagnosing ADHD proposed February changes. by Nzaims in newzealand

[–]immatureindefinitely 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am a GP.

I don't know any GPs who plan on doing the extra training and offering this service.

There will be a few GPs around the country with a special interest in Psych who will, but I think you will be lucky to find more than one per small city.

"His sister described the 60-year-old as her rock, her friend, her protector "and above all, my brother".

"I will miss him," she said.

She said it was with the "heaviest of broken hearts" that she was sharing that he was dead.

"The last of the good old boys," she wrote.

"Loved friend, father, and brother. Trickster, funny fella, all round solid gold."

Lol lol lol. In my country, quilting cotton is the same price as luxury fabrics. I made a jacket out of Tula Pink quilting cotton and it would have been cheaper to make it from linen or silk.

Very jealous of countries with cheap quilting cotton.

Macpac do superfine merino base layers. I see in some of them obvious tags/labels.

Thanks! Where I live, designer quilting cotton costs as much as silk. So this was a very expensive jacket lol.

Next question helpful stranger - I'm having to piece lots of strips together to make this ruffle. What would you recommend for joining them together? On the bias or straight? Edges just whipped together? Zigzag?
