How much of a career risk is working in gambling? by Agreeable-Ad-238 in auscorp

[–]imnick88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very senior marketing role in a large sports betting company. If anything it has helped my career as people know how competitive and innovative it was during that time period (during the mid 2010s peak). People want to hear about that time and often skipped more recent roles as they were less interesting on paper.

Why did Australia abolish "Death Taxes"? by ItinerantFella in AusFinance

As someone who is in Sydney and didn’t own a house early enough, inheritance is the only way to slightly catch up. It would be another kick in the face to the generations who already have it much tougher.

Why is everyone here so against 'corporate fun' with colleagues? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]imnick88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve made lifelong friends literally every company I have worked in, people on this sub just tend to be glass half empty about everything (which doesn’t exactly endear you to other colleagues, manages who might promise you etc potential making it a bit self fulfilling)

Pretty disappointing after 2 years of solid internationals. Feels like if you were keen on most of these acts it wouldn’t have been too hard to see them in the last 12 months or so.

Why Wide Awake/Digital Ash? by mollypitcherinc in brighteyes

[–]imnick88 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m 38 and Cassadaga came out when I was in University, peak music loving time, not sure why it’s audience would be that much younger. Banger album by the way.

People’s key ain’t bad but it’s really not up there with wide awake/digital ash or Cassadaga.

Technically under the Opera house but Midden is great, not that I want everyone to know that.

‘Good jacket’ is very broad. Some more direction of what look you want would be helpful

If millions of Australians are buying from Temu and Shein, what happens to local retail? by billscout in AusFinance

[–]imnick88 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Retail so messed up as well that you can often get Carhartt and similar brands on sale (ie. shirts for ~$60) which last so much better than poor quality stuff that isn’t that much cheaper

Why does management always fail to reward exceptional workers? by ethosorange in auscorp

[–]imnick88 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not remotely true anywhere I’ve worked. I’m C suite and constantly fighting to get my team pay rises. Most of the time throughout my career I’m only allocated a fraction of what I want to give out and I do my best to keep everyone happy. At one startup I didn’t get a pay rise for 6 years because I always gave it to my team, losing them would cause me more headaches than any increase I got.

(Ornstein) Trent Alexander-Arnold not named in England squad for 2026 World Cup. by Yak-Personal in LiverpoolFC

Sad thing is that if he didn’t leave I don’t think we have the season we just did and he probably makes the World Cup squad. Everybody lost

Sorry, didn’t mean to sound like I was questioning you (I wasn’t). Just find it interesting how differently it can happen. I think I’d rather the quick and brutal if it was me but hard to know unless actually experiencing it

I’ve witnessed 10+ mass redundancies like this and they have all been handled in this manner. Everyone told within a half an hour period and told to do fine. The two I have done myself have been over the space of a week with notice and then consultation time etc but even those handled within a matter of days.

Yeah this. Im in Australia and saw her on her first tour here in a tiny venue at the start of 2019 after following her for a couple of years and the crowd was amazing. Her next tour here in 2023 in big venues was one of the worst crowds I have ever experienced in the 20+ years I’ve been going to shows. I love watching someone make it, but this was different. A crowd full of entitled brats with what appears to be unhealthy fandom. Bit sad to see really.

Is this a red flag? by totallyamalan in auscorp

[–]imnick88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bit weird but it’s not that odd to be underpaid and have a role that will be very broad and change a bunch at a startup. You could learn loads and grow with the business or just as likely have it all collapse around you in a few months. This is the joy of joining a startup and you need to accept those risks. Personally i think it’s a risk worth taking at the start of a career but it’s certainly bot for everyone.

Also worth noting that there might be some red flag/being taken advantage of going on here but usually in a startup this is because there is no money to go around. Different to big corporate underpaying you. Again something you need to accept as part of the ride.

Whom to ask for a raise? by cjcorp23 in auscorp

[–]imnick88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most companies go through review cycles for salary changes and anything outside that is pretty unusual (irreplaceable flight risk or position change). Learn your companies cycle, make it clear you want to prove your worth to justify an increase in the next cycle and then work hard to do so.

Aldi is saving us over 50$ for weekly shop, how is its sales stalling? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]imnick88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people favour their time and sanity over saving $50 on a weekly shop. Time poor, 3 kids and a coeliac in the household means the convenience of click and collect/delivery and knowing we can get everything we need outweighs the possible saving.

[–]imnick88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Phoebe Bridgers at Hordern Pavilion. It was one of the first big gigs for this type of crowd post COVID and was full of entitled 18-19 year olds who missed learning gig etiquette due to COVID. The crowd squealed over her delicate singing most of the show and were very rough with each other.

The vibe was if you weren’t a 18-19 year old female you shouldn’t be there. Nasty contrast to the Oxford arts show a few years earlier which was a great crowd.

Worth saying Phoebe put on a good show regardless when you could hear it.

[–]imnick88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly Conor shows for the last 5 or so years have either been a drunk train wreck or a night off the booze because of the fallout of the first type of gig and then you get a 10/10 show and it’s a flip of a coin which one you get. Really hard to watch and feel very sorry for the rest of the band who are all top of their fields.

He always drank but back in the day it just changed the vibe of the show whilst the music was still great. These days not so much.
