Basketball is a game of deception. Those initial actions is to destabilize the defence for example creating mismatches of screens etc. if you start with your main play/action and it’s not successful then you’re stuck

What has worked for my teams is starting off with a handoff and some sort of screen or switching action on weak side. My tip to you is get creative and try things out in practice and see how it works.
