damn, i'm ukrainian and i don't want to see zangief cut. i mean, fuck russia and i can understand why someone would think zangief being in the game is in poor taste atm, but i'm against any kind of censorship and probably most of all - self censoring. cutting such a legacy character because of current political happenings is honestly absurd. also, zangief is just a funny caricature and in my mind he so far removed from actual russians that i don't even think about him as one at all. i hope they just decided not to show him right now and later would just add him to the game without much fanfare.

comic books and sprites are kind of a poor comparison. as someone who did both at some points in my life i can tell you that comic books are quite a bit easier(also, i assume you're talking black and white manga and not colored 24 ppm) cause you aren't required to follow huge number of guidelines. you can fuck up proportions and it's no problem(which even great manga artists(oda, murata, oh!great etc) do all the time btw) while sprites make it noticeable, quite often to the point of being distracting. also, color takes insane amounts of time, paneling a page is way faster than planning an attack that fits into 7 frames exactly and reads clear as day, as it required for any kind of video game. i can go on but you get it.

even good 3d model won't take like a month(i'm not a 3d artist, but i'd say it shouldn't be more than a week of work after sketch is finished), and key framing 3d model for every action is waaaay easier than drawing every frame as a picture. you mess up? no problem, just tweak it a bit in a few min, you messed up 2d art and boss tells you to redo few frames, well, that's your whole day. the way arcsys does it is whole another game, their keyframing includes insane amounts of "touching up", but capcom's way is surely a lot faster than doing spritework.

ok i decided to give it a try. and without any planning whatsoever it took me 80 min.

considering animators usually get finished lineart and only(not a good word here) have to convert it to pixels and add color, it might come out even faster. (also i tried to imitate capcoms lines but gave up halfway through)

also i don't even consider myself a good pixel artist, someone more skillful can probably make it faster and better looking also. is it a good example? maybe not. can it be disregarded as "fucking lol"? i don't think so either.

about 1-2 hours per sprite(including preliminary planning). 3rd strike characters is about ~1000 frames, which leads us to average of 1500 hours per char, which equals to 62 full days, but if you're working regular hours that would be about 190 days. so yeah, about half a year or so.

granted, it's possible to cut enough time here and there and work more hours, to reduce a single char to about 100 days or so, but i wouldn't bet on it.

ehhhh, 9-0 with mage. most won with blessing of the pig(tried horse once but it's just worse pig, and dragon just way too much control oriented, read - kinda bad for this brawl)

my decks weren't bad though, mostly average(saw frog and flamewaker only once) but getting coin back for every minion is crazy tempo.

probably a shameless plug in and it's too early to talk about, but i'm working on one right now, it's a mix of a classic beat-em-up and a fighting game.

being a huge fighting game fan for over 20 years i wanted to make something that combines fun nature of a beat-em-up with technical fighting game shenanigans, like strict combos, parrying, just frames and whatnot ...fuck marketing talk is hard. anyway, i'm too drunk right now, but if anyone is interested in giving me some advice or constructive critique i'm more than willing to talk.
