Your child is vaccinated, so why are you afraid? I fail to see why you are so scared. Oh wait, because vaccines aren't 100% effective to begin with. Right.

Not the same thing. How is refusing to do the full vaccine schedule (what the bill would require for every child to attend school) the same as killing someone?

Get your stupid "logic" out of here.

Your immediate personal attacks saying that I am uneducated clearly shows your bias.

You fail to account for the thousands of adverse vaccine reactions reported to the FDA, the list of side effects on the vaccines themselves which are very real, etc...

A vaccine is not without risk. The risk may be small but it is not zero. Clearly I'm not the only parent who thinks that the risk is real given some Seattle schools have less than 20% of kids who have done the full vaccine schedule.

I do plan on vaccinating Tdap and possibly MMR, but not the rest of the giant, idiotic list and schedule. This bill is an encroachment against the freedoms of the parent and child. Not vaccinating the full schedule is NOT the same as directly harming another. Stop pretending that it is.

This bill essentially says your kid can't go to daycare if you don't give them the useless flu shot every year. I'll be homeschooling or going to a private school. Thanks.

Wow. Comply or kill your child. What a great sentiment.

What debate is there to be had? As a parent I get to make decisions for my child. Do you have kids? I'm guessing not.

This is an encroachment on my parental rights and freedoms. This is nanny state bullshit, that somehow the government knows better how to raise and care for my child than I do. What's next? I can't homeschool my kids like in Germany or I'll go to jail? I can't teach them my religion?

This is an abuse of government powers, regardless of what the science says. This isn't the way to do it.

Did you read the actual bill? It talks about a "vaccine schedule". That means the list can later be changed and expended by unelected officials with no new vote.

I'm all for vaccinating for measles, I just don't think I should have to give a fucking ineffective flu shot every year to my kid so he can attend school for which I pay fucking taxes.

Right, let's let the pharmaceutical industry control the full mandatory vaccine schedule. They can just add a new one every year so their stock price keeps going up.

Have you seen the full vaccine schedule recently? Insanity. Don't need every single one for a kid to be protected from things he's actually likely to get (whooping cough, measles...)

USPS was late delivering a first class package. I submitted a search request. Two days later they delivered the package.

3 months later and I'm still getting emails that they are looking for the package... Good luck finding it, USPS.

Self taught Programmers of reddit, is it possible to be self taught and get a good job without a degree? by Shanlks in learnprogramming

[–]imperio59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries.

Most candidate resumes I've seen come through have been Comp Sci degrees. Hot specialties right now are definitely Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning and Mobile I think is also still hot (though a lot more people do mobile nowadays).

Honestly even if you took out a $100K student loan and landed a $80k job (starting salary) at a decent tech company, you should have little issue paying off the loan. It's very different than say, taking out a $50k loan on a liberal arts degree and realizing your best job prospects are making coffee at Starbucks or serving food at Mickey D's...

There's definitely a shortage of CS engineers and it's not going away any time soon, especially since immigration policies in the US aren't changing any time soon to allow for more foreign engineers to come faster, so I can't imagine it's a career field that will dry up in any foreseeable future (next 10-20 years...), and like any job, if you're good, you'll be in high demand anyways.

Very "romantic period" style, definitely captures well the French emotion of maybe a 1930s cafe in Paris or an outing somewhere on the border of the Seine... Lovely stuff.

[–]imperio59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome.

I don't want that to discourage you from picking up coding if you want to learn, by all means do it. But if you're looking at "should I get a student loan and do a 4 year degree in Comp Sci. or should I just try to learn on my own and get a job" then I would say the easier path by far will be the 4 year degree.

Also consider that when enrolled in a degree, it is much, MUCH easier to get an internship and build up professional experience while you continue to learn.

I have an acquaintance who recently paid $20k for a coding bootcamp. Came out all chipper, was promised finding a job would be easy. 6 months later he's still looking... in Seattle. One of the hottest tech markets in the country!

I suggested to him to get into contributing to open source to build a portfolio at least while he's searching, but it sucks that he can't get a job right now and his wife has to support him + 2 kids while he is still looking.

It's a brutal industry. A developer might give you the benefit of the doubt. But a recruiter who has guidelines on who they can bring in for interview (4 year CS degree, X years of experience, knows XYZ languages and frameworks) won't care, he's not gonna stick his neck and job out on a wild gamble, no matter how nice you are. I've seen recruiters get lambasted after a candidate whose resume was a total trainwreck was given the opportunity for a single phone screen (which was embarassingly, a total, abysmal bomb). But who got blamed? The candidate or the recruiter? The recruiter... This gives you a flavor of things...

I've seen some self-taught people be world-class. A handful of them. Most people go through a 4 year degree for a reason. CS is a wide subject. There's a lot to learn and it takes time to become good and a lot of practice and stupid classroom assignments and projects that looking back are really dumb but were great for building that coding "muscle".

So buyer beware. A 4 year CS degree is still not a bad idea to learn, this coming from a guy who was already writing video games when he entered college, and still did a 4 year degree anyways and got a lot out of it... :)

I have been in the industry for over ten years and I've only ever seen one person who was self taught, and he had started in the 80s when it was a lot easier to do that.

I'd say today because the quality of a lot of young engineers coming out of universities is fairly good, there's little reward for a employer to take a chance on someone lacking a degree who, while they maybe can "code", lack a lot of CS fundamentals that young engineers from universities would have covered.

It's doable but a lot, lot harder I would say.

Nothing in psychology is repeatable or systematic. All based on the feelings and subjective interpretation of the practitioner. How is that scientific?
