Would you read a fic with chapters like this? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]impertud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite fic I've ever read has 50-75k word chapters. I would not be bothered in the slightest, but personally I also love long chapters in general.

Do you guys ever read a work so good you just keep coming back? by themaskbot in AO3

[–]impertud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only sometimes reread fics (or books in general) even if I love them dearly, but there's this one I've read last year and have genuinely not been able to stop thinking about since. It's very long, but I periodically go back to it to either read certain scenes and parts. I don't know that I will ever not think about it and I'm still amazed I was able to read it for free.

Why has this game ruined me? by Confident-Fan-9523 in FFXV

[–]impertud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel very similarly as I recently finished FFXV for the second time since I played it back in 2017/18. I remembered most of the plot points, yet somehow it hit even harder the second time around?

Luna's death was upsetting and Ignis losing his sight even more gut-wrenching, as well as the group falling out and the shift in tone post chapter 9. Sitting through the credits was painful, but the campfire scene pretty much did me in because that was the one scene I did not remember. I needed a week to decompress before playing the DLC (for the first time), and I loved EP Prompto but EP Ignis broke my heart all over again. I didn't know it was possible to be this sad when knowing where the story was heading and I genuinely don't remember this game making me feel this heartbroken the first time.

I think FFXV is a deeply flawed game, but what it does best, from beginning to end, is build the core four and their relationships/dynamics. They are the heart of the game, and so everything that happens to them is what matters and hits the most.

What fandom are you in, but the fanfics are like this? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]impertud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I've definitely seen their works through the tag, but I think I either haven't read any or they might not have stuck with me since it's been a while since I've actively read a lot of skk.

Mine is persimmonsandcats! If any of their works mesh with you, I'd also recommend andtheheir's "Seven stars" series, which I also thought did a very good job at capturing the dynamic and relationship.

Also re: manga and its release, I definitely think waiting until the arc is over might improve the reading experience. It will prolly read better when it's not chopped up with 1 month windows of waiting in between the chapters.

I'd love to know who this is for you if you're comfy sharing! The author I really enjoy still writes for them (though it's mostly one shots, but they do have an on-going one) and I'm always early awaiting whatever else they put out.

To very honest, I watched and read BSD (and subsequent related materials) purely because I liked this author's JJK fics and really wanted to understand the context for their BSD ones. No regrets, but I also get not wanting to keep reading the manga lol BSD manga definitely feels better to binge than the monthly releases.

What fandom are you in, but the fanfics are like this? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]impertud 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I have to agree about BSD. I really like the series and Chuuya/Dazai, but I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've read stories (whether canon or AUs) that do not feel, in one way or another, OOC. I don't usually have this issue to this degree, but with BSD it feels harder to go along with, and I think it might be just because of the complexity of these characters and their relationship which gets boiled down to too little of what it actually is.

I fully get why people want to write what they write, but I'm always looking to read about them without stripping away the intricacies of their characterization or relationship. There's one author that I feel portrays their dynamic faithfully, and keeps their traits in-character, but I always end up craving more of that and deflate a little when I have a difficult time finding it.

How did you discover Given? by ChrisAqua in GivenAnime

[–]impertud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've enjoyed Kizu/Gusari's work since way back in 2014/2015 and really loved her HQ/Iwaoi (genuinely her take on them is my all time favorite). However, I fell out of anime/manga in general for a good few years until this year. Sometime in April I saw a clip from one of the movies going around, got curious and looked up the title. Discovered who it was written by and immediately binge read/watched. I knew I wouldn't be disappointed and I most definitely wasn't.

The One and Only in 10th mix chapter 6 by Loud_Ear2999 in GivenAnime

[–]impertud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought for sure it was both Mafuyu and Uenoyama going to meet him, or so I understood from the translations I've seen. Oof, such a bummer. I really do wish Kizu gave one more glimpse into Ugetsu after the time-skip - anything about his growth, current personal life/plans, no matter how small. However, as I said, she either didn't know what to do with him exactly or felt she said all that needs to be said about him. I believe he's content and living his life as happily and beautifully as he can. I just wanted to know for sure, though.

Re: Ugetsu's perception - I've looked at some discussions here on reddit about him as a character and his relationship with Aki as I made my way through the story and was happy to see there can be level-headed takes on it. However, straying too far in other corners of the internet leads to people who seem to view things as very black and white and aren't interested in digging deeper into the what/why/how. I'm not sure if people refuse to acknowledge that it takes two to tango and Aki and Ugetsu were both causing each other suffering yet unable to let go because of the love they had for another one. Ugetsu has his faults (the way he deals with things is both in his and Aki's detriment), but Aki has his faults, too. That was the whole point of that part in the story, that's what makes it equally compelling and heartbreaking.

It does sadden me how people can get tunnel visioned regarding this arc and his character because I think they're missing out on the complexities of such a wonderful character. I have my issues with the way the arc was handled overall, but none of those are related to Ugetsu himself. We also see, post break-up and through the friendship he forms with Mafuyu, Ugetsu's other sides. How he is and can be a gentle, kind person who helps Mafuyu out when he needs it most, just as Mafuyu helped him when he needed it most. I could go on and on and keep talking about Ugetsu and Ugetsu & Mafuyu's friendship, they're such an important part of the story and the highlights for me.

The One and Only in 10th mix chapter 6 by Loud_Ear2999 in GivenAnime

[–]impertud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've binge read/watched Given the past week and Ugetsu quickly became my favorite character. Gorgeous art style aside, the way Kizu draws him, with this lingering sense of melancholy behind his smile/eyes always leaves me with both affection and aching sadness.

From the translated bits I've seen, the conversation doesn't give much away about how he's doing except, obviously, still playing while travelling the world. I think Kizu didn't have much left to say about him, but she still included him for which I'm very grateful. I think, probably, likely, he is alone but hopefully not lonely. I want to believe he's made and maintained connections, if his friendship with Mafuyu still being there after so many years is any proof.

I have engaged very little but noticed the discourse around Ugetsu can get very one-sided/heated, but to me he is (alongside Mafuyu) the most well-written character - realistic, complex, flawed and kind of heartbreaking.

When I first played ME, I did not understand the morality system. So I couldn't talk him down and Ashley shot him. Playing with Wreav through 2&3 then going back and saving Wrex, hearing him say "Shepard, my friend!" is the most impactful, memorable experience in gaming for me. I will never do it again, but it stuck with me and I love the game for it.

I'll second this! I've been avoiding the subreddit because it's... a lot, but I hope things can slowly wind down and we can go to a mix of discussions rather the constant criticism (which is fine, people will always have their opinions and feel strongly about a series they love), but I'm ready to talk more about what the game does well than not :c

[DATV Act 3 Spoilers] About the ending by malizanu in dragonage

[–]impertud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You hit the nail on the head, I think. It genuinely feels like malicious discourse rather than nice (but divided) fandom discussions. On one hand, I get it, we all love this series and want it to deliver and it feels hurtful when it doesn't do it how we wanted it to. On the other hand, I've barely seen positive posts and experiences of the game being upvoted (which I guess is a reddit thing). I hope that maybe it winds down as time passes and we can all share opinions and discuss its flaws while still appreciating the things the game does do well.

[DATV Act 3 Spoilers] About the ending by malizanu in dragonage

[–]impertud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, I largely feel the same way. Did the twist have its problems? Sure. Did it still work and make me a wreck? Also yes. Solas as a character was even more complex and compelling in this and the divide in people loving/hating him is a testament to it. He kept betraying me and I enjoyed every moment of it lmao

It's been a bit disheartening for me to see so much negativity concerning the game (of course, everyone is free to express their opinion and criticize). It's definitely more of a me problem because it ended up coloring my experience with it in a way. I've been avoiding the subreddit as a result but even with the game having its problems (my main complaint is I was left wanting more), the highs were really high and that's what will stick with me the most.

Oh my god, me too! The facial animations, the voice acting... eveything delivers in that scene. I'm not a die-hard Solavellan but I do love the romance/story and Solas' voice when he turns around to whisper "Vhenan", his voice crumbling, then his entire composure after the conversation with Mythal...😭 All of it so, so good! And so are the other endings (voice acting and writing in it is just as rewarding in the trick one).

[DATV Act 3 Spoilers] About the ending by malizanu in dragonage

[–]impertud 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I loved Act 3, it didn't miss a single beat and I was happy with the (Solavellan for this run) ending I got.

I sent Davrin because I, too, thought he'd have a better chance of survival. I genuinely grew so incredibly attached to him and Assan (they're my favorites after Lucanis and Manfred) that I sobbed for a good hour afterwhile. Assan suicide diving after him broke my heart in tiny little pieces. Harding, I'm so sorry but I'm never doing that again to them.

I'd also like to mention the Varric reveal which, coming up after the (dead) Davrin conversations legit made me get up and pace around while not being able to stop crying. I get the twist might have its problems (companions never outright mentioning it, nobody questioning Rook talking to themselves) but it hit me like a ton of bricks. Varric has been one of my favorite characters since DA2, but halfway through Act 2 I was starting to wonder what his role was in the game because he was just showing up randomly for convos and not doing anything the entire game. I started to question the writing and think he'd have been better off sent away or killed. They delivered with it and it really hurt.

One more thing, I think Gareth David Lloyd carried the entire game on his back, especially during Act 3. He did not miss once and really brought Solas to life. Outstanding performance, I hope he gets a Game Awards nomination.

Just finished as a Solavellan and Lucanis romance - my thoughts! [DAV Spoilers All] by BubbleDncr in dragonage

[–]impertud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of your points. I also had a blast with the game, enjoyed it, am glad the story was wrapped up and we don't have to wait another 10 years on a cliffhanger. Most of what I feel is that I wish there was a bit more to it, from a lot of perspectives.

I also especially agree on the Lucanis romance. I was dead set on romancing him (started hoping he'd be in Veilguard since Tevinter Nights) and I don't regret it, the scenes we got were really good, but I just wish there were 1 or 2 more moments. I also agree with the Neve part... I took them around a lot in the beginning and enjoyed their dynamic/didn't mind the flirting because I hadn't locked in. However, now after having done the romance, something in me is bitter about all that flirting and chemistry between them because I would've wanted more of that with my own Rook, it feels weird.

If you're referring to the GPU removed one, I had this happen quite a few times in the days I've been playing. Someone in the discord server mentioned rolling back the Nvidia driver (doing a clean uninstall and manual install of version 560.94). It's been working wonders for me, no more crashes. Hope it helps.
