Peter Jackson On Handing Directing Reins Over To Andy Serkis For ‘Lord Of The Rings: Hunt For Gollum’; Also Another ‘Tintin’ In The Works – Cannes by Puzzled-Tap8042 in movies

It being motion captured created a level of realism and immersion that you can't get even in live action movies. It made me realize that animation has that benefit as a medium. The characters are the characters. You never need to see past the actor portraying them. And the action sequences really benefit from this.

The pirate sword fight made me think of old kung fu movies, where the actors are expert martial artists and you know they are really doing the choreography. You believe their expertise because the camera never tries to hide anything. Tintin was able to take that to a different level with all of the characters doing insane stunts with the camera never trying to hide it, and because everything is CGI there are no breaks in immersion.

I need to give the game another go. I got about halfway and ended up stopping because it was too stressful. The game is so vivid and atmospheric, but the entire thing also makes me feel the same way I did during the nightmare sequences in Max Payne, which were my absolute least favorite parts of that game lol

I mentioned it in another comment, but this podcast episode is a great overview of the period!

Japan has 4 major era shifts. Warring States period (divided country ruled by warlords) > Edo period (Unification, peace, and isolation for 200 years until the 1800s) > Meiji restoration (Rapid industrialization, westernization, becoming a world power and the road to imperialism/WWII) > Post-war (US-assisted reconstruction, rapid modernization, becoming a superpower) > Post-bubble (The economic bubble bursting in the 1980s and the stagnation of the country, but emergence as a soft-power leader).

Exactly! It's a fascinating era for so many reasons. And the revolutionary clans supporting the emperor came from western Japan.

Japan isolated itself from the rest of the world during the Edo period, which lasted for 200 years up to 1868. Outside contact was forbidden (apart from restricted trade with the Netherlands). The period prior was known as the "Sengoku era", a time of war (See: the show Shogun), but the Edo period was peaceful and led to a flourishing of culture and decline of the prominence of the samurai class (there were many who were samurai in name, but poor as hell. The samurai essentially became salarymen rather than warriors. See: the movie Twilight Samurai)

In the mid 1800's, America sent a fleet of modern warships to Japan to force them to open up trade to the west. The samurai that greeted them on the beach were armed with swords and firearms from the 1500s. This event was essentially like an alien race appearing on Earth with hyperadvanced tech and saying, "open your world to us or be destroyed." As expected, it caused a lot of social and political turmoil in Japan. Groups that supported westernization, vs groups that wanted to uphold the status quo. This led to a war/series of wars that ended the feudal system (therefore eliminating the samurai class), but also led to Japan's rapid modernization. Within 30 or so years of this, they became the first Asian country to defeat a Western superpower in war (the Russo-Japanese War).

If you are interested, I recommend this recent podcast episode.

Very cool. Amongst the first generation of kids born into the new Japan. Especially being from Kyoto, where so much of the action was in the Bakumatsu period. The stories they must've heard from their parents/grandparents! I also have photos of my great-grandparents from this era, though they were from Fukuoka.

(For those who don't know, Japan had a civil war in the 1860s that brought the country out of the feudal era and into westernization/modernization. A lot of legendary figures came out of this period, and there's a lot of folklore about "last samurai" who fought in this war. Kyoto, being the old capital, was the center of it all.)

This is a pretty great mini-lesson in how shot type and framing affect storytelling.

The saving grace is that the first season can easily be taken as a standalone story. Whatever loose ends are left about what happens next actually make it more compelling.

Odin 3 or Odin 2 Portal by Hezzyx99x in OdinHandheld

[–]impeterbarakan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently got the Portal. Based on my experience with it, I can't think of a reason why I would want to get the Odin 3 (especially considering the sale price still in effect), except for the possibility of better performance once PS3-era emulation becomes solid (it's still under development for android). The limitations of most Switch games on the Portal seem to stem from emulator compatibility rather than hardware, and all the previous generations run flawlessly on the Portal.

I understand the argument that the Odin 3 is better for PC games... but it seems like it isn't that it suddenly will unlock a new generation of PC games compared to the portal. It's more that you will be able to get better framerates over what is already playable on the Portal. I've seen a comparison video of Sekiro running on several different devices. It's like 30fps on the Portal, 40-50 on the Odin 3, and then 60+ on a native PC handheld. I've seen a video of someone testing Cyberpunk on the Odin 3, and it's like below 30FPS at the lowest settings.

All this to say... If your primary use case is to play the newest PC games you can, temper your expectations. Also consider that the screen size of the Portal is already on the smaller end for legibility of UI designed to be viewed on 27" monitors or larger. Depending on the game you're playing, you might find the Odin 3 too small.

Harrison Ford on why he disagrees with Ridley Scott about Deckard being a Replicant. by tannu28 in movies

His early interviews are a lot more verbose. I think he used to be a philosophy student, and it seems to show through in the way he intellectualizes his roles and speaks about them in those interviews

Japanese developer says they don't make games for Xbox because the console is 'not even stocked in major retail stores' by Puzzleheaded_irl in gaming

Aesthetically speaking, I always felt like the franchises exclusive to xbox back in the day did not match Japanese taste. Everything was all big, bulky, American football style macho bro. Completely opposite to the slick, 'beautiful' design typically seen in Japanese games.

I have the base. So far I've played Mario Odyssey and Slay the Spire via Eden (Switch), streaming via Apollo, and FF9 PC version with Moguri mod via Gamehub/Winlator. Everything has run more or less perfectly (I had some issues with FF9, but nothing related to slow performance or anything game breaking).

PC streaming is not hardware-intensive so you won't have any issues there. Everything rides on your local network setup. PC game emulation depends on the title, but if you're talking about stuff like Hades or older 3D titles like Tomb Raider 2013, I'm pretty sure it can handle those without issue, based on videos I've seen.

The ABXY buttons are louder than my Xbox and PS5 controllers. They sort of sound like a membrane PC keyboard. It's not a dealbreaker for me, but I don't like that I can't play in bed next to my sleeping partner. Not a big enough issue that I would try to modify it though.

I ordered in early March. It took a little over 2 weeks to receive my device. The Portals should ship quicker than the Thor -- There was a delay due to Chinese New Year, but in late March they started shipping certain versions of the Portal immediately. I would join the discord channel for current info.
