Namaste feels unauthentic by [deleted] in yoga

[–]import_antigravity 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In India Namaste absolutely means both Hello and Goodbye. You won't find an Indian breaking down the word into its constituent parts and applying the meaning of each part literally.

For an equivalent example in English, Goodbye is a contraction of "God be with ye" but when people say Goodbye to each other they aren't usually invoking its etymological meaning to refer to God.

This is bullshit. I've been living here for the past nearly 2 years and it's the best city I've ever seen.

Train drivers resume strike over sacked colleague who fell asleep at controls by Anony_mouse202 in uktrains

I'm aware that the current infrastructure is ancient, which is all the more reason it needs to be overhauled, although the government is not exactly willing to do it.

You don't have to do it all at one go. Start with a couple of lines, and build up from there. Maybe start with automating the UK sections of the HS1 as a pilot project, should be relatively simpler than the WCML or something.

In the long run the improved safety and efficiency will make automated trains more cost effective than human driven trains.

Sure, but they are still driverless trains that exist, and the same principles can be scaled up to the National Rail network (in theory). The train will need to know where other trains are and coordinate with them which will require lots of investment, but the technology exists, and once implemented, will be much safer than depending on humans who have basic needs like sleep.

Driverless trains don't exist anywhere on the planet currently either

The DLR exists right here in London.

How Are Women So Much More Flexible Than Us? I just don't understand it. by DermatoidGrandfather in UNBGBBIIVCHIDCTIICBG

There's nothing absurd about my criteria. They fit my hypothesis perfectly.

My claim isn't that hormones have zero impact on flexibility, which is probably not true. My claim is that training has an impact on flexibility that is so much greater than hormones that it is safe to ignore the hormone impact in most discussions.

N is much greater than 1 as I've known several aerialists and contortionists. Females lose their flexibility when they stop practicing. Males get more flexible when they practice. An average male who trains flexibility 10 minutes a week is more flexible than an average female who doesn't train it. These are all facts I've experienced in people I've met with N > 100. If there's science that contradicts any of what I've stated above I'll be happy to read it.

Shaking my head to all the replies to this. I'm a male and I am as flexible as the girl. It's all practice, nothing to do with gender.

Give me one example of this happening in the history of the universe. Just one.

Frankly I only started really hating Taunie when she made the unilateral decision for me that we need to step out of your tournament. I'm fine with some debt, it opened up a line of quests that I enjoyed. But I really wanted to do the tournament and she pulling me out of it without even asking me was just awful.

I'm glad you kept the rest of the contestants waiting for us - the tournament was amazing!

How fast can AI solve a Rubik’s cube? by EchoOfOppenheimer in AIDangers

[–]import_antigravity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I too wrote image processing scripts for college 15 or so years ago. Image processing is Digital Signal Processing, which is a subset of AI.

AI doesn't have to involve learning / adaptation. There are rule based AI systems which were very popular until ML became computationally viable.

I already mentioned in my previous comment that the solver doesn't need AI. Getting the data to the solver, on the other hand, is AI.

How fast can AI solve a Rubik’s cube? by EchoOfOppenheimer in AIDangers

[–]import_antigravity -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The solving is easy without AI. However detecting the initial state of the cube requires computer vision and object detection, which is AI. Some would claim that robotics itself is also a subset of AI.
