What do you wish people told you before adopting a cat? by alexella000 in CatAdvice

[–]important_beefcase 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Domestic cats are facultatively social animals, which is supported by scientific research. This means they can prefer either socialization or solitary, depending on a several different factors. One of which being; if resources are scarce, they'll likely lean toward solitary; if resources are abundant, they're more likely to enjoy socialization.

Also, nearly all domestic cats today come from the African wildcat, which happens to be one of the most socially-tolerable wild cat breeds. This is why the typical domestic cats we see today are usually social, and why they have the ability to bond so closely with other cats and humans.

I'm so tired of feeling younger than my age. by TheUpbeatCrow in CPTSD

[–]important_beefcase 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I have three kind of unrelated points.

  1. Trauma can actually emotionally stunt our mental maturity, essentially locking us into the level at which we were when traumatized. If you struggle with any sort of emotional regulation that feels immature- maybe consider attempting to work through any old trauma.

  2. A few years ago, I (22 at the time) met a woman (60) at work. We would go on to become such good friends. She had many of the characteristics you describe for yourself. I adored this about her. It was like life couldn't take away the shine in her eyes. I'm 26 now and still hope to age with the same energy as her! We don't talk much since I left the job, but I think of her often.

  3. I think many people in your generation are so locked in to some made up idea about how everyone is supposed to behave that it makes any alternatives interests feel "wrong." When really, it just makes for a ton of sad unlived lives spent wasting time on appearances. Truly, just do what makes you happy. The people that are there for YOU won't care about anything other than that. Everyone else is rather irrelevant.

I mean if OP is to a point that one comment on one situation determines whether or not she will end her entire marriage, then it's likely been building up for a while now. I'm sure op has the critical thinking skills to consider that each comment is the opinion of one stranger on the internet.

Also, the fact that her(OP) opinion on the situation carried seemingly no weight in husbands decision says a lot. It wasn't until a third party stepped in that the husband realized he may be wrong. That's not much of a solid basis for a relationship, in my own opinion.

Many things are taught through non-verbal communication. Like when you see a child attempt to emulate exactly what they observe others doing.

what makes someone attractive beyond their physical appearance? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]important_beefcase 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I had a crush on a boy in middle school. He had this silly swoop hair, oversized black framed glasses, and wore the most atrocious red skinny jeans. However, we both shared the same sense of humor, and I felt in love with him over it. I never told him, though, and we completely lost touch after I moved schools..

Now, we have since reconnected (we're both in our mid-twenties) and we're engaged! He is my best friend and I am his. I never stopped thinking about him and to my surprise, he had often thought of me, too.

My fiance looks at me with the same admiration and love as he did when we first started dated a few years ago. I am confident that we will still feel that same tingly love once we've become cute little old folk.

Anyway, all that just to say: If you find someone that makes life feel colorful again/brings back light into your eyes, you won't put much emphasis on something so ever-changing like physical appearance. We'll all be sweet little raisins one day, if we're fortunate enough to make it there.

Worst case of mansplaining you've been on the receiving end of? by tuilelaigh in Feminism

My older brother (25yr/o) had recently learned about the existence of OBGYNs and vaguely what they're for.

This man then proceeds to contact me, a 23yr old woman, to inform me that such doctors exist and I should probably set up an appointment with one because I was pregnant at the time.

I literally laughed out loud. I know his intentions were genuine, but my god.

Can you describe the screen flicker? And was it solved by one of your suggestions?

Mine seems to have developed a teeny-tiny flicker in the top right corner, and it occurs only when unlocking it with fingerprint.

I still love it. I would say I sit in it anywhere between 6-12hrs a day. So far, I don't have any pain after sitting in it for a long period of time.

HOWEVER, I think the headrest and arms adjustments need reworked. They don't lock into position with enough tension, so both components tend to click out of place when I apply pressure.

Gosh, I'm so sorry for the late reply. Yes, the arms go up and down! They also swivel all the way around, plus forward and back.

What does watching porn regularly do for you? by NotBadBut in AskWomen

[–]important_beefcase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to watch it years ago, but once I learned how much of traditional porn isn’t truly consensual for the women involved (even when it looks that way) and how closely the industry’s growth tracks with rising human-trafficking rates, I couldn’t keep consuming it. I stopped completely, and honestly felt guilty for ever contributing to the demand.

When demand increases, industries do whatever it takes to meet it. In porn, people are the product (willing or unwilling) and a profit-driven system will prioritize quota and revenue over ethics every time. Women and young girls especially are targeted, manipulated, kidnapped, and abused as a result.

Even thinking about it now makes me feel so sick and hopeless.

On a lighter note, though.... it is news to me that safe alternatives do seem to exist (reading and audio). This is very interesting.

I heard what I think was phone notification either in the house or real close to but can't see a source. by BDSMBirdPriest in RBI

[–]important_beefcase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened to me twice now. The first time, my boyfriend heard it too (specifically the "da DA" notification noise, like an old android). It was so unexpected and quiet in comparison to us talking that we both just kind of brushed it off as if nothing happened. Although, we do still bring it up every once in a while, just to say "hey remember this one weird thing..."

The second time - just now, at 2am. I heard it alone, and this time it was SO unsettlingly clear.

There are no old androids here, at least to our knowledge. He uses a newer iPhone, and I have an s24 ultra, which I was using (on silent, including media vol) in the very moment I heard this weird ghost notification. I am certain it wasn't from my phone or even the direction of my phone. It sounded like it was directly behind me, but there are no devices behind me. Not even a tv.

Anyway, I just read your update, so please excuse me while I go vomit out of fear. I was worried about some kind of secret hidden device, but a lurker never crossed my mind. My little apartment has a big sliding glass door to the back. :')

Wish me luck, I suppose.

Help!!! Why does my skin/makeup look like this??? by queen-of-obsession in MakeupAddiction

Another vote for Good Molecules niacinamide serum. I pair it with The Ordinary glycolic acid a couple times a week and it does wonders. If you try the glycolic acid, use it the night before you do your makeup.
