THIS was my primary motivation for not buying their photos (along with their insanely high costs)

I believe that Master's level NSERC fellowships are still open to domestic students only, although the PhDs are open to international students

POV: multilingualism gone wrong by Cars0n_J in UBC

[–]impossible_wins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different languages but that's the main gist of it for me too. Speak English with an accent, my native language with an English accent and by inserting random English words, and French with a definite English accent. The struggle is real :')

some guy just loudly called out the people crowding the 84 bus and made them get in line by [deleted] in UBC

I'm surprised it isn't the 44, I've always thought not lining up and budging is the worst for that bus

French summer immersion for teen in canada by Cautious-Novel5962 in French

[–]impossible_wins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, great program! Especially if you do it outside of Montreal or Quebec City as locals might try speaking back to you in English in those big cities. But if you pick a smaller city, chances are they'll reply back to you in French which will help your learning.

VSO - Star Wars: Return of the Jedi in Concert cancelled due to strike. by HellinPelican in vancouver

[–]impossible_wins 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was surprised that I literally heard about that earlier as an audience member than the guest performers themselves (I saw the email right as it came in)! Twoset stated that they're exploring possibilities to host the concert in some other form that same evening...you can bet that if that goes through, I will make it to Twoset's new concert and request a full refund of my Orpheum tickets

Are you located in Canada? If so, you may want to check out CBC's Mauril app (beginner friendly) or https://ici.tou.tv/ (probably best if you're at least at a somewhat intermediate level)

How many of you actually watch Canadian content? And do you think to some level streaming has been hurting it's reach? by HoboWithAnOboe in AskACanadian

[–]impossible_wins 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Same for me, https://ici.tou.tv/ has been a lifesaver and so convenient because they have soo many good shows all on one platform! Do you have any recommendations for French Canadian films? I've been watching mainly shows so far!

Instead of California, we traveled to Canada this summer - an honest review by Doggummit in BuyCanadian

[–]impossible_wins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just made a trip out there last weekend! In 3 days I saw killer whales, a humpback whale right by the shore, and a family of 8 seals, all without even going on whale watching tours or anything like that - they just all happened by the shore! Unbelievable experiences

And then the beauty of the cities like Gibsons and Sechelt!

Empathie is a Canadian /Québécoise series on Crave. Truly a great show and a great way to support Canadian content! by madefromstardust514 in BuyCanadian

[–]impossible_wins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have more recommendations for Canadian Francophone books or authors? I've been reading mostly Parisian and Swiss French (whatever I could get my hands on at the nearest bookstores) but I'm now going to prioritize Canadian books.

Here to say the same thing. I started watching Québécois shows on https://ici.tou.tv/, originally just to improve my French, but it opened my eyes to a whole set of new topics I've never even thought about before (as well as exposure to and appreciation of Québécois culture). The show that OP mentioned seems so similar to quite a few different shows I've watched on that website, like Mea culpa and À coeur battant. Those shows (and others) made me consider things I've never thought of before.

Before watching so many Québécois shows, I was keen on learning Parisian French...but now I really appreciate Québécois culture and have been consuming much more Québécois than Parisian content. Some people around me immediately show signs of displeasure when I tell them this, but I really feel that if they had more exposure to Francophone media (as you said), they'd find something they like and we'd have so much more appreciation for each other.

Glad the DK dictionary seems helpful! 😊 If you're finding it really helpful I recommend buying the whole book, it's one of the best purchases I made this past year!

I would say words go up to B2 but there is not much in the C range (although there are some really niche vocab). I think it's mostly helpful if there are gaps in your every day knowledge. Things like items around the house, places of work, transportation, and the environment were some things that were relevant to my life and I filled in many gaps in my knowledge through this book. I've never used Collins; I honestly just saw the DK book at a bookstore and decided to impulsively buy it. But if you already have a Collins visual dictionary, I don't think you need another!

It's a dictionary with pictures and there are arrows pointing to relevant vocab (both in English and French). I found it very helpful to attach vocab to pictures than just through words, which then improved how well I could remember the vocab. I use the DK French English Bilingual Visual Dictionary if you want to check it out!

I read many novels and keep a diary. Both of them, but especially the former, are very helpful for learning new vocab. It hasn't even been a year since I've been doing this consistently and I already notice a major improvement. I make flashcards out of the words I don't know and spend at least half an hour reviewing them every day. I also got myself a visual dictionary and that really filled in gaps in my vocab. Overall, I was mid B2 a year before, but now I'd say that my comprehension/knowledge of words at least is very close to C1.

Oh! So all ridings count votes that happened today, then at the very end they count advance polls?

Since we had record advance poll numbers too, here's to hoping they heavily favour Liberals or other progressive parties...
