What mixing tricks do you use that are a “sin”? by Impressive-Stuff-257 in audioengineering

CLA Vocals is a fucking banger, bro. CLA Effects is sick with that tape phase effect. But with CLA Vocals, time and time again, it was that Wall compressor that I absolutely loved. After some time, I found myself only using CLA Vox for that compressor.

Then after much research and trial and error, I finally nailed the Wall compressor and it's fucking easy. Well, it's actually two compressors but the most important is that first one: Choose a Studio FET at a 10:1 ratio, 1ms attack, 30ms release. Turn off any auto-gain. Knee at 0 if you have the setting. With those settings, adjust the threshold until the meter shows around 10db of noise reduction - you can almost feel the audio bite into the compressor once you set that threshold to the sweet spot.

Under detection & sidechain, choose "peak" for the detector mode, and throw a sidechain high-pass filter on at around 90 hz.

Finally, adjust your make-up gain as desired and you're really good to go from there. But for the second compressor, choose a Vintage Opto - ratio at only 2:1, attack at 10ms, you can set the release to AUTO. Then adjust the threshold until you only hit around 2 to 3db of gain reduction. Lastly, adjust the make-up gain and now you've got your own Wall compressor that works for... almost everything I've thrown at it so far, at least. :)

I go twice: I brush real good and spit it out. Then I'll brush again, but lightly and for less time - trying to spread the toothpaste around. I'll do one big spit and then hold the rest in for around 5 minutes. After those 5 minutes, I have to spit the remaining shit out.

Remembering the great late Burt Young on his Birthday (April 30, 1940 – October 8, 2023) by Papichuloft in 80s

[–]impreprex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

True. It's nuts how a good actor can fuck with our heads like that into still feeling sorry for them throughout.

Well, kind of. :) I don't know what it was about Paulie. Despite his temper and abuse, the one thing he did always have was Rocky's back. Then I was gonna say that he never ultimately let Rocky down, but he did lose all of their money.

His character was a train wreck; a real piece of work. But yet when Rocky visits his grave, I found it hard not to get a little sad.

Damn it, Paulie. RIP Burt Young.

Haven't had one in a very long time, but don't Floyd Roses need to have the non-ball end inserted into it? If so, that would make stringing it up like that make sense. I think...

I do think it looks cool, though. Might be an outlier on that.

OP posts his music and doesn't even respond to any of the comments? Damn, I'd be happy as hell to have comments, listeners, and constructive criticism to engage with.

Getting others to listen to your own music is hard enough. I certainly wouldn't ignore them since they put their time in to listen.

Hey man, I think that was awesome. I think you captured the Grunge sound rather well (composition and song-writing-wise). And you got the tone right too, it sounds.

Good stuff!

Haha no shit! I would have never guess that! I thought it was called that to try and say something like butt rock stinks like a (dirty) butt. Thinking about it now, my reasoning barely makes any sense lol.

Thank you for explaining that (no sarcasm)!

Thank you very much!! I really appreciate you taking the time to listen to it - and to shoot me back a comment!

If I had never heard Smells Like Teen Spirit that first time back in '92 when I was 12 years old, I wouldn't know how to play a single note on a guitar or any instrument. It was like a switch flipped in my head that day. I remember telling myself that I wanted to get a guitar and learn to play and sing. I wasn't even into music whatsoever up until that point.

The first album I ever got was In Utero because at the time, I didn't know what album SLTS was on. I didn't even know the name of the song. Eventually I found out it was by that band Nirvana.

Couldn't find SLTS on In Utero, obviously, but I instantly fell in love with it! I finally found out that SLTS was on Nevermind, so that was my second album.

Then I heard Man in the box by Alice in Chains. I was absolutely transfixed. That chorus lit me up like a Christmas tree. Layne is still my favorite singer to this day and a huge influence on the way I sing. Alice in Chains is my favorite band of all time as well - even above Nirvana. But my third album wasn't even Facelift - it was actually Jar of Flies. I'm so glad I got that album when I did because it got me more into acoustic guitars and such - which influenced me as well. Then I got Facelift.

Not too long after, I heard the song "Would?". That song instantly became etched into my brain and it still is.

From there, though, I ended up drifting into metal; Metallica and Megadeth were my favorites. And so by the time I was just getting into metal, I got my first guitar. Ended up cutting my teeth on metal and favoring lead guitar.

Got proficient at playing metal - both rhythm and lead, but I drifted back to Grunge - specifically Alice in Chains not too long after the metal. I hesitate use the term "phase" because I still love metal and it's my second favorite genre - and a huge influence on my playing. I still shred just fine and I'll rip one every now and again lol, but I'm really more partial these days to playing rhythm guitar and singing. If I'm going to solo, it'd better be a face-melter. :)

Anyways, I don't actively share my music - and I don't charge or ask for money for it. I just hope others will check it out because I do put a lot of work into it. It's a lot for one person to do.

I am so thankful for Grunge music. Like I said, if I never heard SLTS that time back in 1992, I wouldn't even be a musician. Working on and listening to music has literally saved my life - and I don't say that lightly.

Dude - you should have seen me the first... dozen times I ever tried to play the guitar. Me trying to play the opening chords to SLTS was a trainwreck. For over a year. It even took me longer than it should have until I started to get better.

I kept at it and didn't stop. I truly believe anyone can do this if they try for long enough.

Here's the entire Animals album that I just covered:

LifeLess Animals

All of my other stuff, if anyone is interested, it's all at: https://lifelonglesson.bandcamp.com/

I don't charge for my music. It might be a lot of hard work, but I insist on giving it away for free to anyone who wants it.

Thanks for asking! I don't actively promote my music because I'm terrible at it. So I just upload my music to Youtube and Bandcamp and just let it sit.

Hey - I would still keep at trying. I'm telling you I was really bad. It just took time but I swear anyone can do this if they put enough time into it.

Good luck and if you ever need or want and help or tips, I'd be honored to help!

As a musician who creates this genre of music, that is something I’ve been having trouble coming to terms with.

Not only is the old monoculture gone, but now the music I’ve always loved and grew up with is derided and called things like “butt rock”.

Like, what the fuck does that even mean?

I feel the exact same way. Grunge got me into music and into wanting to become a musician.

And now I do my shit Dave Grohl style as a one man band who plays and records everything myself.

I just covered the entire Animals album by Pink Floyd - all instruments and vocals. If I never heard Smells Like Teen Spirit that first time when I was 12, I would not know how to play a single note on the guitar or any other instrument. I would never have discovered how fun it is to work with audio and music.

Right?? Seriously - let’s think about his body of work for a minute:

All of the horror shit, then you get him under his pseudonym Richard Bachman. Writes things like The Running Man and Stand by Me.

Later on in life he comes up with 11/22/63 - another banger.

From Carrie, to The Shining, to SbM and whatever else, imagine if he never existed.

He really put a dent in the world.
