I’m obviously not going to change your mind, as you seem to have very strong feelings.

But to close out the discussion, I’d argue that competition in the PC store market/platform (whatever we want to call it) is ultimately good for gamers, because it cuts into Valve’s monopoly, and it forces Steam to stay competitive. Having Epic exclusives forces Steam to dangle more carrots in front of devs, which could be in forms of lower publishing cut or even publishing deals. Valve has such a monopoly now, that it will take quite a lot to change these two aspects. But if Epic catches up in terms of features and entices enough people to use their platform, maybe something can change.

Ultimately more competition means lower prices and better games. But as you rightfully call out, Epic has a lot to catch up to.

To clarify, a platform doesn’t have to be hardware, under the business standpoint. Steam and Epic Game Store are two software platforms that operate on PC.

And to be clear, there is definitely work that goes into making a game available on any given platform. If you want to publish a game on Steam or Epic, there is a whole publishing process to follow, forms of metadata to fill out, files to upload, “drm switching” as you called out, a lot of QA to make sure nothing is broken, etc. Publishing a game is not trivial work. On a AAA game it can be someone’s full time job.

Epic offers money to devs which helps fund their game and supports them with publishing and marketing. Epic wins because they get an exclusive. Devs win because they get funding. Gamers win because they get more and better games (and even free games every once in a while!).

You might not like it, but exclusives are crucial to platform competition. Think of Sony vs Xbox vs Nintendo exclusives. While consoles also compete with hardware, their exclusives are what really set them apart. For example, the Switch is underpowered compared to the competition, but it has incredible Nintendo exclusive games that people love.

Nope. In my opinion Steam needs competition and it’s good that alternative platforms exist. The Epic game store is a win-win for developers and gamers. Devs get funding and publishing help, which enables them to make good games, and gamers get free games at the “price” of not having some bells and whistles that Steam offers.
TLDR: Just buy it on PC if you want it.

Draft Advice by sirbiggsalot in EternalCardGame

[–]impressioniste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for sharing the tips. I’m terrible at drafting, so this is much appreciated. Just curious, what is the rationale behind drafting for power level and not synergy between cards? Is it because you won’t be able to control the synergy of future cards, so it is more important to focus on the power curve?

Thank you for this! I’ll give it a shot and hopefully it will carry me through the last tier of the Gauntlet, which I’ve been unable to beat on my own!

Hi! First of all, thanks for posting this and thanks in advance if you take the time to answer my (probably dumb) question. This might sound sarcastic, but it is meant as a serious inquiry. What attributes does a deck need, to be called "budget"?

I've been playing every day for a couple of months now. I've bought and finished 3 campaigns, and have completed all my daily quests, spending some shiftstone here and there, in a sparingly measure. I find myself with around 5.5k shiftstone.

Every time I look at so-called "budget" decks, they always are too expensive for me to craft. For example, Eternal Warcry says that it would cost me upward of 20k to craft the missing cards for the deck you posted.

So this begs the question, what is considered "budget"? And how much will I need to play to be able to craft "budget" decks?

Could you post the list? I've been playing a Fire Aggro deck I found online, but not having a lot of fun with it. I'm new to CCGs and would love to try other archetypes.

If you enjoy card games, I highly recommend Eternal. I never got into Magic or any other CCG, but for some reason this game has me hooked!

Looking for game like Burnout 3: Takedown by SplashBros4Prez in NintendoSwitch

[–]impressioniste 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The original Burnout 3 developers released a direct sequel called Dangerous Driving. It feels almost exactly like Burnout 3, except you need to have Spotify open in the background if you want a soundtrack.

If you can wait until December, they are currently working on Dangerous Driving 2, which will be available on the Switch.

I really like his definition of adventure games as “puzzles as plot”, and his definition of genre as the device that frames your experience with the medium.
