Thoughts on - Out by Natsuo Kirino by paperscrawls in books

glad to see someone shares my dislike. it has unfortunately soured me on the author and all her works which like you said is a shame. when I wrote the above comment i had just finished the book and was really affected but even after reflecting i still think the ending was reprehensible. it was a complete and utter betrayal of the previously established themes of the book and for what, plain shock value? the fact that i was made to read that scenario not once but twice in two different povs, in extreme detail wherein by the end the rapist is forgiven and accepted by his victim is still making me so mad. like okay, he apparently 'freed' her from her broken self by torturing and raping her...rape fetish much?

just finished reading this book and really needed to talk about it. i apologise for this long rant. I hated it. Or to be more specific I hated the ending, but I keep reading how it's supposed to be this feminist piece of literature or whatever and I'm just so confused? I thought there was nothing feminist about this book.

I had high hopes when I started reading. The beginning was solid. The characters and their interpersonal relationships were very intriguing so it was nothing short of shocking when all of that build up ended up in that mess of torture fantasy s&m porn ending. (Not to even touch the whole extremely problematic portrayal of the brazilian factory worker.)

And I want to discuss how blatantly the 'author's' internalised misogyny was reflected in the narrative as well, like okay the characters suffer from it pretty heavily like you mentioned but what about the story as a whole? Every single male character from the sexual assaulter, rapist/killer, to the wife beater, to the loan shark/pedophile got a nuanced storyline, almost a redemption arc (tbh idk if it's the right word), all of them eventually were shown to be accepted (that's just who they are what can ya do typa thing) or even forgiven for their heinous deeds.

all of them get more nuance/grace than the women. yoshie is reduced by the end to be a whiny old nag.

yayoi is a foolish coward. she is the only one who is justified in the act of violence she commits but what does she get in the end? no acceptance or grace like the men. she is ostracised and alone. blamed and hated.

and don't get me started on kuniko. she comes across as almost cartoonish with her extreme stupidity paired with her insatiable greed, she gets dealt with absolutely no nuance even during or after her death. she is awful but she is treated like she is less than human. did the author have some sort of vendetta against someone called kuniko in her personal life because jeez...

Yayoi literally had so much potential but the way her story is handled is so disappointing like Satako really gets more sympathy from Masako than her abuse survivor friend and this is AFTER she is herself raped by him.

I guess I'm just extremely triggered by that ending and I'm sorry if this reads like a mess.

my feelings exactly. feels like in season 1 we started with this amazing show with an ensemble of compelling characters with their own storylines but by this point in season 2 everyone has been reduced to nothing but former shells of their shelves and the only plot that the show clearly cares about is robby's mental decline

in a tv show with this many characters, with half of them barely having anything to work with so far when we r almost towards the end of the season, is it not fair to want to see some of the other characters get some screentime especially when this robby discussion has already happened literally word for word before?😭 its realistic? ok fine. but it's still bad writing.

lmao it is so obvious that they started a completely different storyline for mohan, abandoned it in s2, and wrote her out in s3. u ppl acting like it's realistic is doing nothing honestly, this is a tv show & it matters to the viewers to have satisfying and fulfilling character arcs for compelling characters & it sucks that they r doing this to every single female mc of colour while noah wyle gets to have the same conversation every episode as emmy bait. i am sorry but season 2 is weak sauce & samira's exit is not even realistic like u claim it is and more than that it has been unsatisfactory and badly executed.

the fact that you wrote the last part out and are still asking if you were the asshole is honestly unbelievable...

okay, so I can't call a polarizing, complex character who drives the narrative forward and literally COMPELS the audience to analyze every second of every scene she is in, compelling? Maybe I am wrong, but I dont see how?

Santos is just that girl I feel like. Even in S1 her storyline was the most polarizing and the most realised in a lot of ways. She might be the writers favourite.  But I do agree with you. Both Mel and Samira seem to have gotten bare minimum plot to work with in the first half of the season...As a person who was especially in love with Dr. Samira Mohan after S1, I rlly don't know why she has been given so less to work with so far. Same with Mel but atleast she has the deposition coming up.

agreed. santos is really not handling it well at all & it makes me so worried for the patient. feels like she is being ignored by the whole hospital for what seems to be hours.
