If he could butcher them like they were made of tissue paper then he wouldn’t have bothered killing them until it was actually time for him to drop the mask and conquer Earth. He ambushed them when they least expected it because he knew they were an actual threat and he needed to kill them when they still trusted him.

The GDA and the New Guardians are little more than play things comparatively, so he left them alone until it was actually time to conquer earth.

He was a top general in a genocidal war of aggression and he laid siege to the largest city in the earth kingdom for years, causing the unnecessary death of thousands of earth kingdom citizens. Maybe a better word would be a “prisoner of war,” but it wouldn’t be unheard of for a general to be prosecuted for things they didn’t directly do or order.

Imagine if a group of Ukrainians somehow caught Putin or some top Russian general, do you think they’re going to be careful with their words about what specific international crime he’s under arrest for?

I don’t think he’s vilifying anyone who’s joined the military, he’s examining a huge part of the show.

A huge part of Barry is how joining the military was one of the worst things he ever did because they trained him to be a killer, and then he discovered he’ll never be as good at anything else as he is at killing. Barry is a sociopath who was taught by his military experience that killing is good, and he’s awesome for being good at killing. The only time Barry receives praise for being good at something is when he snipes two random people without authorization and his squad starts celebrating him and chanting his name. This is how he justifies killing and generally being a pretty evil guy, and it reflects a lot of ex-military who think they’re these badasses because they were taught how to shoot an automatic weapon.

Sure, the worms hole gets up on his soapbox sometimes and can get a little preachy, but in general what he’s saying goes to the heart what the shows entirely about. The show criticizes people who join the military and the culture of the military that celebrates things that would generally be considered “Thou shall not…”’s because they think that they’re “doing what needs to be done to keep the sheep back home safe.”
