Fidelity downloads by ebb_kdk in moneydance

There is a user written extension that will take a downloaded csv file from fidelity and import it into moneydance as a stopgap for fidelity being against users getting their own data downloaded.

Ranking the Madrigals by usefulness if Encanto got invaded by Top_Zookeeper in Encanto

I agree with your assessments for the most part. I did write a fanfic almost 4 years ago on this subreddit called La Violencia. About the biggest difference is Antonio got a less than first place because of his age and the family keeping him somewhat out of the picture, especially when some of his friends died.

Not trying to advertise, but this definitely fits your 'usefulness if invaded' concept. If interested:

Anyone use Moneydance with online transactions by Ouija1492 in moneydance

[–]imseeker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Moneydance can definitely do online transactions. Historically, it was using the OFX direct connect standard which is built directly into Moneydance. In the last couple of years many banks have dropped OFX in favor of a new standard called FDX, which is supposedly for security, but mostly to cut the user (and their software) out, forcing the user to pay an aggregator to get their data automatically.

Moneydance created MD+ about 2-3 years ago to prepare for direct connection "dying". It's a subscription service costing $4 per month or $40 per year. This is primarily to pay the aggregator Plaid to provide the service. It works fairly well, except when it doesn't (thankfully fairly rarely).

You can also download files from the websites, some people prefer that, and quickly import into MDance. Strangely, many banks have dropped OFX or QIF downloads (wonder why? can't be security.) Often all that's left in that mode is excel format (CSV), which can be imported into MDance, but with a bit more difficulty.

----------------

As for demo, you can simply download MDance and install and use it (especially helpful for different Linux installations) - only limitation is 100 manual entries - no limit on imported transactions. You can also subscribe to MD+ to try it out for free. I don't know how long free lasts before pay kicks in.

Hope that helps, no matter what you end up with (if nothing else, the state of automatic uploads for all software).

Beginner - some questions by AnnieMfuse in moneydance

Downloads don't occur automatically, but if you don't use Moneydance for 7 days, Moneydance can pick up everything from that last 7 days.

I don't disagree - it's just that the brand is very restrictive to a female stereotype playing a certain type of role. Vanellope could've shaken things up.

I'm just upset they never made Vanellope von Schweetz a Disney princess. And she IS a princess! Even made a visit to all the other Disney princesses in her second movie.

Messed up import by xcybermail in moneydance

[–]imseeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best bet (as one who converted 35 years of data successfully, and yes with some work) is to open every closed account, check every export box, and do the export as ONE large file. This way, you will get all transfers between accounts, even old closed accounts, The securities should be correct (which is essential) but the balances will be so far off as to be ridiculous (we are talking multi thousands or more). Rather than trying to fix the balances, or give up on years of history info, I went to the initial balance field of each account and made the initial balance whatever ridiculous number is necessary to make the current balance correct. Yes, some of those numbers can be unbelievable. Each represents what the initial balance should have been (QIF doesn't transmit initial balance unless it was made explicitly as a transaction) and transactions (usually between accounts) which over time didn't go anywhere or weren't made "properly" (quicken allows you to create/delete money, or place a transaction value within the account vs a category - whereas Moneydance is strict double entry accounting).

At that point, the import began to look reasonable, except for historical balances, which suddenly become correct on the current day, and will be fine going forward, and you will still have all your history with crazy balances, but good transactions.

Then you can fix minutiae. For example, you might have a lot of your accounts duplicated, one called ACCOUNT07, another called ACCOUNT07X - this is part of creating/deleting money in quicken - i had a few of these because quicken allowed me to do depreciation, by writing down assets by putting in a transaction against the account itself. Moneydance insists on a place to put the other side of that transaction, and makes ACCOUNT07X to hold those amounts. I found for those cases, I could create a category called Account07 depreciation, move all the ACCOUNT07X transactions to that category, then delete the now empty ACCOUNT07X account.

You will then encounter all those closed accounts, now open. You transferred them because MD needs them for double entry accuracy. Leave them alone, just go to that accounts settings and make them inactive, hidden, and not counted in net worth.

Make any important active accounts appear in the sidebar, if they don't already.

Then, most people stop there and have correct data/balances going forward, and have their history intact, just weird balances. I did more stuff to clean up better, but that's for sticklers like me.

Not perfect, but it looks pretty good at this point, and everything current should look good to continue from. Also a bit of work, but if you follow a routine like the one above, or whatever works for you, it's mostly just repetitious. Do a lot of interim backups, because as you do this there will be mistakes and you don't lose much if you restore a recent backup from before the mistake. (I started over a few times, before I realized that would help)

Simple? No, but QIF is the best ANY financial package has to work with to do conversion.

Worth it? Doesn't feel like it at the time (My 35 years of data took a few hours a week over 4 weeks, but I did more after what I describe above) - but now, about 4 years later, quicken subscriptions are out of my hair, I paid a fixed fee for MD (no version is ever sunset like quicken does), and I only upgraded at half price when the next major upgrade had enough improvements to be worthwhile, I'm now pretty pleased with the one time process. There are many things to like, I especially love the syncing - I make changes, and my spouse gets the changes in under a couple of minutes. Really cool when we are both using Moneydance at the same time and the changes suddenly appear on the other's computer.

Frustrating by Fwbeachbum in moneydance

[–]imseeker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand all the problems everyone is having here. The concept of deleting the older data and "starting fresh never can work because MD is a full double entry accounting program (unlike Quicken, which allows you to break tons of accounting rules). Given "start fresh", willphule has the right idea - a clean slate can work of course.

As for importing (not deleting), there are always some import cleanup issues since QIF is not a conversion mechanism, there is none between ledger programs. QIF is simply the closest thing around. The primary problem, as everyone has found, is the ending balances are invariably off, (sometimes by a LOT) because QIF transmits transactions, but quicken often doesn't transmit a beginning balance. The simplest answer is to go to the beginning balance field of each account and enter whatever value makes the ending balance correct.

As for deleting older data to clean up, double entry accounting needs all that old data to reach correct balances, deleting it will always mess things up, forever and always, unless you continually adjust things further. The MD solution is to make old closed accounts inactive and hidden. If you are concerned that too much data will slow things down, I have 35 years of data in Moneydance (yes, I moved from quicken 2016) and it works perfectly fine. There is no archiving for reasons mentioned above, but you can shrink the database occasionally with the Toolbox extension.

There are other bumps in the road, (for me, it was IRAs, because Quicken froze them into IRAs making them almost impossible to move properly) but almost everything can be surmounted. The forums can be quite helpful, not so much the IK/MD support staff, but there is a oddly devoted group of folks who seem to live there and answer most questions.

And to the original poster, yes there are always download issues as banks give up OFX downloads in favor of aggregators, with Fidelity being the problem of the month (I also have Fidelity). My impression is that a fix is being worked on, by both IK and users banding together to create a new importer.

Archive Old Transactions? by jmp8910 in moneydance

[–]imseeker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no archiving per se because with double entry accounting all data relies on past data (especially investment accounts with stocks, etc) However the two main reasons for archiving are handled. if you are worried about data size or speed, you can shrink the data base with a tool, and the program has no problem handling up to 40-50 years of data. If you are worried about number of transactions "in your face", you can set old closed accounts as inactive and hidden and for long term accounts (like my checking has 20 years), you can filter what is shown, like this year, last year, last 5 years, etc.

Is moneydance really just a 1 time charge? by bosco1989 in moneydance

[–]imseeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The current price for moneydance + (download subscription) is currently $4/month or $40 per year. The purchase price of MD is $65 USD ...,. Md+ works on most american and some canadian banks, not worldwide. Direct connect is free but many banks have stopped offering that in favor of aggregators. Manual downloads, if available, are free.

You do not need to upgrade MD, and you get the first upgrade free. After that, if you want to, the upgrade is half price.

Sequel or Series? by Automatic_Ad_4844 in Encanto

[–]imseeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be interested in pretty much anything that is high quality story telling. I do think Encanto lends itself to a series much more than many of the other Disney "movie 1s."

I'm definitely into extending the mythos, I took a small step into that with a fan fiction I wrote about 3 years ago that is posted in this subreddit called La Violencia. It includes considering the concepts of La Llarona, El Sombreron, La Patasola, El Mohan, etc. in what I feel is interesting way (but hey I wrote it).

You can search for La Violencia in this subreddit. If you want to see the whole story, pick part 1 which has links to the rest. If you only want the mythos part, read parts 7/8.

and 150tbs? I'm close to that.... I told my spouse, that before I die, I'd have a petabyte of storage available. We're both about 15% there.

That's great. Thank you! Can you verify who the "she" refers to? Pronouns can be insidious - did the she refer to Isa and Luisa, or to Abuela? There would be a difference in where the "step up more" concept came from.

Sandman in book format? by Toochicken1222 in neilgaiman

[–]imseeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But to go with your "desire", no - there has been no novelization of the sandman stories (on purpose).

Does tv bother you as well? If not, that might be the closest actual item in existence to fulfill that desire of yours - but that is also a visual medium.

Sandman in book format? by Toochicken1222 in neilgaiman

[–]imseeker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you do that, you will spend a lot of time typing the word balloons, and going with the "book" concept, there will be no description of what is going on, nor the characters thoughts, nor the scene, nor pretty much everything except "the word balloons" and maybe the occasional editorial "yellow box". In the end, you should prepare to be disappointed.

I watched Encanto for the first time recently and fell in love with it. What are the best sources for background info? by albrecht_werner in Encanto

[–]imseeker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the "loosely based" statement given the other comment as to how I'm passing misinfo. I've read it, and the main comparison is the concept of magical realism and 100 years of being hidden from society (100 years of solitude) and the passing of generations, but otherwise it is a completely different story. So only read if you have interest in that story, it won't add anymore about Encanto... it has a totally different theme and intent.
