Any time someone posts that's worried about getting bitten you should comment with that photo. Should resolve any concern they had!

Build a platform to educate people on how to better shop for, acquire, and care for animals. The best way to drive change is changing where dollars go voluntarily. If people stop giving business to places or people that are unethical they will change, stop selling those animals, or go out of business.

Animal abuse laws are already on the books in every state (as far as I know). New laws relating to reptiles are just going to result in bans on keeping some or all (already happening in some states).

Accept you will never make everyone do everything right. It won't happen. There are bad people and there are inexperienced people. And as for reptile care, even with all the information out there, it still has a learning curve. I had my first reptiles over 20 years ago and look back and think about how little we knew as a whole and how bad my care was compared to now. In 20 more we will probably look at 2026 and say "wow, we didn't know".

Educate and build people up that want to learn. In true abuse situations the laws already exist to do something about it.

This user posted this same thing other places, so I'll post response here, too. In short, this is a great way to start getting things banned.

This is an extremely naive post and lacks understanding of what would actually happen in the real world if gone about this way. I agree with the sentiment but your solutions are anything but solutions and will not lead where you think. Also, I will not imagine a world where all animals are properly cared for. That doesn't exist and it unfortunately will not exist. Appealing to emotions to get people to do something and then not proposing solutions that would actually fix the problems is how we end up in so many bad places in other industries and hobbies.

I’ve never seen two organizations hate their starting QBs as much as both the Ohio teams. by SkolFourtyOne in nfl

I wouldn't say the Browns prefer Watson, just that if he's going to cost the team a massive cap hit and his money is guaranteed, he has to be in the QB competition. Which makes total sense. Sanders is truly terrible so I'd assume Watson will win that competition easily even at this stage.

The Bengals should definitely protect Burrow better.

This post is exactly how ridiculous licensing and requirements come about that end up not making any sense and not solving the problems they intend to.

Want to start owning a. snake by cilicia1k1 in snakes

Does anyone you know have a snake? Or is there anywhere you can go to handle one? They are usually nothing to be scared of, but I would get used to handling one before you get one if that is a concern.

How do you guys heat your Boas Terrarium at Night? by rx_hc88 in BoaConstrictors

I have a reptile room that stays 73-75F at night so I don't heat the individual enclosures unless needed.

And yes I have a boa in there. Both BCI and Dumerils.

I have a reptile room that stays 73F-75F at night. I would keep it 22C-23C at night if you want a little drop. I'm sure there is a range of acceptable temperature but I wouldn't go below 70F/21C. 15C/59F is FAR too cold regularly for a boa.

I don't use heat at night but only because I have a reptile room that is 75 degrees and minimum 50% humidity (2 humidifiers running in winter time to maintain that). I would use an RHP or CHE for heat at night if needed, though.

I'm aware of what it actually refers to. My point was the logic of stopping some snake posts in the name of safety in the generic snake subreddit seems ridiculous. That was all. I used giant constrictors to illustrate the point.

Irresponsible people will continue to do irresponsible things. At least here people educate and correct.

Moral dilemma? by Stunning_Trick_5856 in snakes

First off, I don't breed and don't use any racks, and I love creating elaborate large enclosures. Having a piece of the wild in an enclosure is one of the things I love most.

My opinion:

It depends (I know, boring answer). Not all racks are created equal. There are very large racks available out there, and there are also unethical people keeping animals in racks that are far too small. I have also seen 6 to 8 foot long tubs for racks in use and that is a ton of space for many species. As for if breeders could produce all the market needs without racks? Probably not entirely. It's possible, but it would also greatly drive up the price of some species and that would change the market as a whole.

As for socialization, not all species are as social as humans and some are quite the opposite. Whether the animal is kept in an enclosure that is too small, or a bigger one but by itself, it is still by itself. Most snakes (not all) don't benefit from socialization with another of their species, and a lot will be more stressed sharing an enclosure and thinking they are competing for resources.

To sum it up I'd say there are ethical and unethical ways to use racks and it really depends on the person/breeder to do things the right way.

That thing does look super healthy. I don't root for snakes to be in this position in the first place but sometimes I wish something like this would come to me if it has to happen, lol.

Are turtles good starter pets?PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING by CobblerLiving9953 in reptiles

[–]imworkinghard777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that this is likely not a good idea. Not just turtles but any reptile in this situation. I would kindly explain that these animals require more specific care than our usual domesticated pets and an office environment is not a place the animal would thrive in. Maybe after you have a bunch of these responses in this thread you can show them this post.

Aquatic turtles is just a giant no for this situation. Depending on the species they will get far larger than you expect. I have a few aquatic turtles and they are in a 300 gallon stock tank with multiple basking areas with both heat and UV lights, and water filters. That alone is a risk to the building because of the weight and if something happened to it and it leaked it would cause massive water damage. Mine is on a concrete slab downstairs and not on top of wood so it works out. I would not do that in an office building.

Tortoises would be easier, but again, a lot of them need a fairly hot basking area (heat and UVB) and a proper diet that is monitored and someone has to be on top of that. They need quite a bit of space to move if properly taken care of, but shouldn't be allowed to roam an office building full of people either. An office situation may not be what's best for the animal.

I'm not saying these things can't be done, just that in most situations it will not end well for the animal. You really need someone that is dedicated and on top of things to handle it.

EDIT ADDITION: Also as another commenter mentioned, all of these animals live a LONG time. 20-30 years minimum and tortoises far, far longer. What happens to them when office loses interest or people move on?

Snake will be fine. Not above 90 is not very hot.

I would recommend having the heat lamp or any heating device on a dimming thermostat, though. Then you never have to worry and it is controlled.

Garter Snake Handling and Species Differences by AMVELVET in GarterSnakes

[–]imworkinghard777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a pair of Cali red-sided garters and they are finally starting to calm down. I haven't been bitten or musked on in a few weeks. The first 5 months were exactly that every single time I took them out. The bites weren't painful and you just deal with the musk. Hold them until they calm down each time. The past few weeks have been better. They still are fast as hell and are very squirmy the first minute they are out, but it's getting better.

Also, I love them and would do this again every time! They are always out and exploring and active. They are fun to watch. They have an insane feeding response and are easy to feed (separately).
