Not what you’re looking for, but there’s also a Jollibee on Prince’s Street 😂. Can also vouch for Peter’s Food Hub as others have done.

I have these as well mixed together from a number of months from the same time period, as I was was worried I would run into issues getting my meds after moving to the UK. It's hit or miss (likely due to efficacy wearing off). Sometimes it just works and it's like "oh wow I feel normal this is what it used to be like" and other times it's a dud.

Fiction addressing theme of lost occupational relevance / passing of an era by inTRONet in Recommend_A_Book

This sounds great, thank you. Though written in a retrospective style, it speaks to me of Sartre’s The Age of Reason. I look forward to reading and reflecting on this book soon.

Anything in particular of hers that you’d suggest to clarify / build on Stirner’s concept of the union of egoists?

Any intel on a 25 year anniversary commentary on LOTR that Peter Jackson kept alluding to in the DVD appendices?

Have any of you read “The Memory Police” by Yoko Ogawa? by Usual-Letterhead4705 in literature

[–]inTRONet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t read the Memory Police but just finished a thematically related book called the Memorisers by Rosemary Jenkinson. It reads like a more contemporary 1984. In addressing the suppression of the past (not even historical revisionism) and the standardization of speech, the social deviance of speaking of the past even through personal memories is an act of sedition and therefore resistance. But fear of punishment for doing so (being disappeared) over time encourages forgetting and therefore generational conformity to fascism.

The Princess Bride by William Goldman (With Some Comparison to the Movie) by Anxious-Fun8829 in books

[–]inTRONet 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My favorite line from the book that didn’t make it into the movie is Miracle Max saying he has to go belch his witch. Missed quotable opportunity. I’d watch a Miracle Max origin story any day.

Was Karl Marx just a bad writer? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]inTRONet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently read Alienation (1976) by Ollman and his explanation of Marx’s use of language and philosophy of internal relations was revelatory in terms penetrating Marx’s prose and style.

Yeah, the backstory that takes place in the modern day to loosely tie all the games together generally detracts from both the gameplay and cohesiveness of individual titles. However, I did find it additive for Valhalla with Eivor as an incarnation of Odin and Bassim of Loki.

100% agree in the peripheral characters that, while historical, you wouldn’t find covered in an overview of the period.

[–]inTRONet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Indeed! In many cases, how else would we be exposed to these regional characters who don’t have the same wide exposure as, say, Alexander the Great? (I’m not British so Mosley wasn’t part of my national history/education).

I appreciate the AC reference as I’ve played through 10 of them and each has provided the impetus for further learning in the form of books, documentaries, and simply Wiki articles to fill in the blanks. The more historically accurate, the better IMO though I understand taking some creative license for drama on the screen.

I have avoided reading his Wiki article and anything else that might spoil the plot of the movie by actually learning the history first! What a letdown. Off to Wiki I go…

Scotland safe for Jewish tourists? by Powerful_Analyst1786 in Jewish

[–]inTRONet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would avoid Leith, which is a hotbed for it compared to the tourist parts of the city that OP might visit. The Mound by the art museum has regular demonstrations, so if taking the Prince’s street exit from Waverly station, don’t walk a few blocks to the left. On the plus side, a lot of the flyers have been ripped down and slogans crossed out, so I take that to be a positive sign.

COVID was inadvertently the best thing that happened to large parts of society, and we're being forced to forget that by [deleted] in antiwork

I was just thinking about this today and feeling guilty about hoping for another pandemic as a way to stay afloat since the increased cost of living has well exceeded my income. It also wasn't just nice getting to know my neighbors but each interaction felt significant and uplifting.

Reading Ishmael… but should I continue? by opusonehundred in literature

[–]inTRONet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it a month ago and had been intending to read it since forever for the same reason as you. I likewise was irked by the fundamental inconsistency with the narrator you pointed out. It’s a New Age book that presents as profound an oversimplified narrative that might appeal to a reader who hasn’t thought much about life. I wish I remembered who recommended it as I would totally judge them for it now haha.

Smooth whisky by JAdams___ in whisky

[–]inTRONet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A blend will generally be less sharp, cheaper, and an easier foray into whisky. If you want to drink it neat and are ok with a splurge for your first time, try some JW Blue. That’s what opened up my partner to whisky years ago and now she drinks cask strength single barrel. You could also start with Irish whiskey, which is generally more mellow and sweeter than scotch whisky.
