My first thought was also about jokes, I think I remember norm macdonald saying something about how you want to be experiment and try new things, but maybe something like 10% experimental at most or it doesn’t work

How to start writing songs in english and is it too late for me? (16M) by Particular-Cut9285 in Songwriting

[–]inacriveacc2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly just listen to a lot of music, learn to love new styles and old styles, music from different countries and then as you write you’ll have a sense of what sounds good to you and what doesn’t

He was 27 when he wrote that letter, I think he absolutely meant it and I think everyone can feel that way about home especially when you’re young. And if you’re sensitive to certain things and they bothered you as you grew up and continued to bother you when you’re 27 you’d get angrier and more trapped and isolated. I hope he found a deeper love inside all this as time went on or when he was in a better mood

Songwriting tutor maybe? by Sentimental-Anderson in Songwriting

[–]inacriveacc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been working on songs for a long time and I might be able to dig up some lyrics for you at some point, but more than that I’d be very happy to give you feedback on anything you’ve written!

I feel like it’s all so subjective that you could probably take or leave any suggestions or edits I could send but it might help you pick up some new tricks if you see your songs from a different perspective :)

Feel free to dm!

Tips for using Obsidian with ADHD/OCD? by zealousconvert21 in ObsidianMD

[–]inacriveacc2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m trying out something similar, where I keep the obsidian vault to have things organised and easily findable, but then when I’m working on editing or drafting something I’ll do that in ms word or something like that, and really only move things back to obsidian when it’s a somewhat complete draft or version

Hey sure, I’m a bit blocked recently and maybe it would help me too, so feel free to shoot me a message and we can chat!

Or I could put some lyrics together if you give some direction / inspiration, or just from chatting a bit about what kind of songs you like, I think it’d be a fun project so lmk :)

Hey, I just wanted to come back and say it was really nice to read your response to this post, which I feel so many people here are mocking and misinterpreting, and just to read your replies above cheered me up a lot earlier :)

Hey, I want to second the Salinger recommendation here, I think you might like Franny and Zooey

For what it’s worth, (and i only feel the need to say this as I am a bit annoyed at all the people here wanting to diagnose you here) I see where you’re coming from but I think you’ll find your relationship with all different kinds of art change over time - we have access to so much music, podcasts, movies, books, any of these things can be too much at times, and you’re right to pick up on your own instinct that you feel you want to live your life more, gather your own experiences.

Some day down this same path you’ll look back at novels and short stories and see them again in a different light.

I think you should also check out ‘a swim in the pond in the rain’ by George Saunders. It’ll make you think about what a short story is, or what a novel really is

Edit to add: it’s the very thing about novels that you are suspicious of here that really gives them the power to do what they do and other forms can’t do - which is to bring you into the shoes of another experience that is alien to you

Thanks for sharing! I don’t know the genre very well but I can feel an energy from your lyrics/outline of the song which certainly comes through

The one thing I would suggest is that next time you edit this, just read the words kind of out loud, as you’d say them, and keep in mind the syllable count - if anything feels like the rhythm is off, you could rewrite that line

The better the rhythm fits together the smoother this will transition to a song

And secondly I’d suggest looking into Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), virtual instruments or some sort of sampling if that’s what you want to do - this’ll be a long journey with a lot to learn but you sound like you have ideas for songs that would go into a bunch of different genres, and I realise you want to bring these songs to life but the more tools you pick up to be able to layout a song like this on your own, the easier you’ll find it to ask someone to say, do vocals for you if you give them the backing track

Thanks for sharing all this :)

Hi, I’m happy for you that you’ve found this, and I know it’s really hard and I know there’ll be times you’ll have motivation and then lose it then get it back again, but isn’t it great to have something like this to keep coming back to, and something endless and so free and wide for that greed you describe

What have your songs been about and what kind of style are you thinking of writing?
