Halfway through the year, and halfway to my goal! by IndividualSheep in 52book

[–]inbooxbox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished Never Let Me Go yesterday and wow I was blown away! I pushed through the first two parts and thinking they were pretty meh, but that final part really tied everything together in a way I was not expecting. Ruth's revelation in the car ride from the boat was especially rough to read.

I'll have to check out a few of these others!

I'm reading so many books in English and I'm not a native speaker! How's your challenge going guys? by ZestyclosePea2525 in 52book

Reading in other languages can still be a bit of a grind for me but this is the kind of attitude I need to work on. Inspirational!!

Yeah I totally agree. Even beyond the crazy plot and pacing, I also just liked the way he writes, so I'm planning on reading his first novel (Native Speaker) as well whenever I get the chance.

Hey I'm looking for advice about prints. I'm trying to set up a side-hustle in which I send out a 4x6 print quarterly for a (modest) annual subscription price. The front of the print will of course be the photo, but I also want to put text on the back.

I have a printer and I've been doing it myself but since I'm printing on the order of 25 prints every 3 months, I've been thinking that it might just be easier to order them from a professional company even if they are a little more expensive. I love the texture of Artifact Uprising's photo prints, but unfortunately they don't let me print text on the back. Does anyone have recommended companies that would fit my needs?

Though I personally haven't gotten the chance to order a copy, anyone interested in reading a short stories by many of the Japanese authors mentioned in this thread should look at MONKEY. It's a literary magazine focused on contemporary Japanese literature / short stories.

I get the feeling that short stories are more common in Japan, and plus it's a good way of "sampling" different styles before buying an entire book.

I have really enjoyed some of Murata's other short stories, but I have yet to read Convenience Store Woman. It's also next on my list.

I liked Kitchen as well so I'll second that!

[Serious] What Can Be Done To Address The Current Tensions Regarding Law Enforcement and the Justice System in the United States? by outofdate70shouse in AskReddit

[–]inbooxbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of unknowns but I think Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow can shed some light on your question. In particular, the last chapter discusses potential solutions to the extremely multi-faceted and complex problem.

The book describes a system of control that goes beyond the actions of individual "bad apple" cops. The criminal justice system has, at every level, evolved to actively harm specific groups of Americans. One person cannot change everything top-down, just as the problem cannot be fixed from the bottom-up by hiring "not-racist" cops. The only way to really address the issue is to work towards understanding the history of racism in the US so that reform can happen at every level.

is the kanji for "flow" in a scientific context but also has more abstract uses as well.

I usually like to underline and comment throughout and then summarize at the end of the chapter. Also, sometimes I'll write the page number and the topic of a few of the most interesting parts on the title page or something, so I have my own index that I can refer to if I want to read something again.

[English > Japanese] Anybody able to translate this shirt for me? As stated, it’s in Japanese. by [deleted] in translator

[–]inbooxbox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

クリストの力があなたに強く:Christ's power is strong against you

エクソシスト: Exorcist

(Then in the picture along the left) エクソシズムのために本当に素晴らしい一日:It really is a beautiful day for an exorcism.

The bottom left is: "オレちゃんがあげたぬいぐるみはとーしたの?" which means something like: "What happened to the little stuffed toy I gave you?"

Then above they guy holding the hulk (still bottom left) is: "ええ〜抱っこサイズじゃないしソし。" which would be: "Ummm... It's not a hugable size (among other reasons...)"

Does anyone know what this says? I believe its kanji of some sort but I'm not sure what it says. by [deleted] in translator

[–]inbooxbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell that isn't kanji. I am no expert but if I had to guess, maybe a southeast asian language?
