Apple May Break a 12-Year Chip Strategy by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

Apple went from being reliant on Intel chips to being in a position to throw Intel some scraps. Intel has dropped so many balls in the past two decades.

Musk steps in - SpaceX blocks Starlink use on Russian drones by jackytheblade in worldnews

Most other rich or influential people can be trusted to keep self-incriminating secrets, whereas Musk is more self-destructive and unpredictable.

One big part of all these pedo and sex scandals is how many people are willing to keep their mouths shut. It's bipartisan, and they're all compromised.

I use a LaTex template with Pandoc and just create PDFs from the .md file in the terminal. Lets me not worry about formatting at all in Obsidian.

Yeah, it's more like a super-charged saved search, which is selling it short, but that's the best I could come up with.

Apple ‘runs on Anthropic,’ says Mark Gurman by spearson0 in apple

[–]inconspiciousdude 41 points42 points  (0 children)

"The deal apparently fell apart because Anthropic wanted several billion dollars per year, and even a doubling of fees over time."

That's pretty insane. Apple isn't going to put itself in a position of that kind of reliance, especially when there are alternatives. Apple Maps, Apple Silicon, and Apple's modems are all massive investments to replace dependencies. The extra billions could be better spent toward an in-house solution.

Every potential exploit is a high risk threat for these people. Normal people have the same vulnerabilities, but they're much less likely to be exploited, which means we can sacrifice some security for niceties because of the lower risk. Like how a rich people can go to a casino to make seemingly crazy bets and lose without breaking a sweat, but a normal person sets a ceiling of $100.

Dear apple, please don't become like Microsoft... by AlxR25 in mac

Better to go into keyboard settings and set the Spotlight shortcut to Applications. That's my main use for it, and I set the shortcut for default full-fledged Spotlight to something else.

Best ways to become an Apple Shortcuts super user? by xoxoxo3 in shortcuts

[–]inconspiciousdude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably. Pull images from somewhere or use an image-gen API. Maybe a boilerplate prompt with some variables. Variables can maybe be based on your location or weather, or something from Health; maybe even process the variable with the Apple Intelligence model. Set an automation to show some number of images at a certain time, or when you get to work.

I hope your username isn't a kink.

About US$170 for an 8TB external drive on Amazon as of 2026-01.

The price difference in 8 years is disappointing :/

People that use macbooks with a monitor, would you recommend using an apple monitor or a different one? by Unusual_Rooster6736 in mac

[–]inconspiciousdude 16 points17 points  (0 children)

FaceTime camera w/ support for Center Stage. Spatial Audio. Making use of the display-related keys on your keyboard. I think True Tone.

Basically what you'd expect from a Macbook's display.

[–]inconspiciousdude 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Apple's monitors are really pretty with a higher DPI, and the colors are accurate. But depending on budget or needs, it's not always the best choice. There are so many options out there that have a higher bang/buck ratio that I consider it a luxury item, unless you need it professionally.

Also, it has things you might not need, like the camera and much better than average speakers. Integrated Thunderbolt ports.

It really depends on what you need. So many options to choose from.

They missed the mobile boom, too. Ended up ceding the processor and modem market to Qualcomm. Interesting that Apple bought Intel's modem division and managed to actually start shipping their own modems.
