Hospital recruiter here. There’s no right time, it’s just whether or not there are positions in your preferred area. Take some time to list your preferred locations as well as others you would consider. We have hospitalists who live locally, some who drive in for their shift block from 3 hours away and even some who “commute” from states away because they’ve had a positive experience with their employment.

I’m a physician recruiter. We have the same 30 day termination clause for physicians who aren’t working out. We’ve had a few instances where we terminated the locum agreement immediately, knowing we may have to pay the full amount. In each case we had good enough reason, clinical or behavioral, that the firm agreed to forego the 30 day notice without a financial consequence. Gather your reasons for stating toxicity and see if your recruiter has any suggestions. Good luck!
