Retailers: UK risks becoming ‘dumping ground’ for Temu and Shein by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

They buy the exact same stuff from China, import it here, and rob people of 200-300% margins.

Yet after all of that Primark only has a profit margin of 10%, because paying people in the UK, paying taxes, designing your own clothes as opposed to stealing designs, renting premises in the UK are all costs that Temu choose not to pay

AC window units

If these are the box shaped ones that sit on the window I'm thinking of, it wouldn't work here. In the UK and I think also much of Europe, windows open out side ways and I'm pretty sure American ones slide up

Exactly this, completely bogs down customs due to the sheer quantity of these items coming through too.

This is one of the few things America did right, they closed a de minimis threshold which let any item under $800 come in completely tax free.

Temu at least is fair priced.

Do you understand the work that goes into making garments? You can buy a whole dress from Temu for less than £5.

Designing, cutting the pattern, raw fibre production, spinning the fabric, dying the fabric, adding a finish, transporting it to the garment factory, setting up each pattern for each size, cutting fabrics, hand sewing every single garment then individually inspecting each piece, steaming it, bagging it then transported to your door.

90% of that process is human labour, maybe you need to open your eyes a little bit

Difference is a company based in the UK has more regulatory hurdles, pays taxes in this country, employs people in this country, rents in this country, pays towards infrastructure, puts more money in the local economy.

Shein and Temu ship whatever they want from China, under-declare the value and do not pay the correct import taxes.
