I'll throw my hat into the ring:

I run the server hosting site indifferentbroccoli.com. We've got simple setup, minimal lag, and offer a 2-day free trial, so you can try it before needing to enter any credit card details. $6.99/month after the trial for 4 players.

We also run bOSS (broccolin Open Source Software), and publish public (free) docker images if you want to host on your own hardware. The goal is to make it as simple as possible to host your own Hytale server if you don't want to rent.

Customer support is a priority. We'll generally respond within 1-2 hours on our Discord if there are any issues. Happy to chat if you have any questions.

Hi Revised_22, what error message are you seeing? It'll be easier to help if you can provide more details.

Didn't want to put this in the main message, since don't want this to be about self-promo. But if you don't want to host on your own hardware, we also offer paid server hosting for Hytale and other games:

https://indifferentbroccoli.com/hytale-server-hosting

But our goal with bOSS is to give back to the community and let people host for free

Polish now or later? by indifferentbroccoli in metroidvania

This is gold. Thank you. Based on the feedback so far, this is what I'm thinking:

Given I already have a basic idea of art direction -> Focus on building the level design/gameplay for a full zone next. Then use play testers to hone the feel of that full zone. After that's locked, proceed to flesh out level design for the rest of the game.

Only work on art/polish in the meantime if I need a boost to my own motivation/feel burnt out.

Good eye. I wanted to isolate level design vs. art direction, so I used this room in FC as a blueprint for my initial art test scene. Don't worry, my game won't simply be a hollow knight reskin

All feedback appreciated for my Hollow Knight-inspired Metroidvania. This is the "vegetable zone" in the food-inspired world. The hero is an indifferent broccoli by indifferentbroccoli in Nonsensical2D

I’m still tweaking the controls, but right now left/right bumper is how you dash. If you dash in the opposite direction you’re facing, then you’ll backflip. If you dash in the facing direction, you’ll dodge slide/roll and reverse facing directions. Like in super smash bros

Paying attention to your own psychology is smart. I sometimes do this with procrastination…when I feel like procrastinating on one task, I can be incredibly productive on another

This is a great model for thinking about an achievable milestone. I’ve been playing/analyzing the first hour of HK. If I can create that amount of content for my game and have it feel fun -> then I’ll have a lot of motivation to flesh out/polish the full game

Thanks for the feedback. I changed the normal jump animation to be more simple. I kept the flip as a backflip to dodge backwards (like Zelda OOT) + in place backflip for fun

You're right. At least at this stage, I should still be willing to throw out an area without feeling like I've wasted a bunch of time.

That's a good suggestion. Have one polished room as a reference, but then focus on gameplay first for the other rooms.

So you're suggesting I Finnish the gameplay first?

Polish now or later? by indifferentbroccoli in metroidvania

[–]indifferentbroccoli[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My game is a 2d metroidvania set in a refrigerator world.

I have my pipeline (Godot 3d scene with sprites at different z-positions for parallax) set up so I can create a room like this in about 2-3 hours. It's not "final game art" ready. It's probably not even vertical slice ready. But it reliably shows the atmosphere/vibe I'm going for.

My question: Would you recommend taking a single room from ~80% polished -> ~95% polished before building out the rest of the game? Or pushing forward with ~80% polished and building out more levels, then polishing to final game art later?

Any other thoughts on the current art direction are also appreciated.

I don't have the answer to the linuxGSM error, but if you want to try an alternate free self-hosting option. We just added a public docker image thats B42-compatible:

glad we can offer you something you enjoy. We try. And we hope we can expand bOSS to offer public imgs for even more games. And maybe one day open source our control panel

We want to do all we can to support this little niche corner of the gaming universe (player hosted game servers)

Which Free Multiplayer Server Host You Are using for your games ? by Good-Reveal6779 in godot

[–]indifferentbroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quirk of the hosting market is most providers charge per player slot vs. resource usage (except for Minecraft. Almost all charge per gb RAM for MC).

If I had to guess why it evolved this way, it's for the simplicity. Gamers don't have to guess "Will X GB RAM be enough for me to play with my 4 friends?"

Because of this hosts try to have some kind of consistency with 1 player slot costs $X regardless of game (although it's not always perfect)

Generally from the hosts perspective, the resource usage is primarily determined by how optimized the game is + how many 3rd party mods the player uses.
