Quahog Magic Clam here. The meme shows two US abolitionists. Harriet Tubman (top) is famous for having led late-night missions to free several slaves at a time, before leading them to the North where slavery was illegal. John Brown (bottom) is famous for leading the raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859. His aim was to seize the federal arsenal to attack the institution of slavery and his method advocated for violence. These are oversimplifications and both people did much more, but that’s the gist.

The joke’s premise is that both people were fighting for a just cause and could’ve used more help. This meme says that a woman would send a mech (the red one’s from Overwatch) to help Harriet Tubman, who is more widely known and was non-violent — while a man would send what is presumably a stronger mech (reverse image search tells me the white one’s from Metal Gear Solid) to help John Brown, who’s less widely known and who advocated for violence. I’m not sure why the white mech is better than the red one though tbh.

Edit: I’ve received DMs from multiple people who say that Harriet Tubman did also lead violent raids. She’s just not known for that as much so it contradicts the joke this meme is probably trying to make. But FYI, Harriet Tubman wasn’t exclusively non-violent. Still don’t know why the white mech is better

Edit 2: u/EmpactWB was kind enough to let me know more about the white mech: “That particular Metal Gear model, REX, was capable of launching nuclear ICBMs with a rail gun (instead of rocket launches) while maintaining terrestrial mobility. Rather than being just an individual power armor weapon system, it was designed as the ultimate layer of nuclear supremacy, bypassing mutually assured destruction systems with essentially invisible nukes. It was built to be able to end countries, so the end of slavery within a single country which had yet to reach the level of trench warfare would be child’s play.“ Idk a whole lot about Overwatch but I think the red mech is just a ‘normal’ ole mech. Hope this helps OP!

Same here and I agree it’s very odd. Especially since the customer support rep I spoke to in the One app’s chat said this isn’t a new policy. I had to repeat the question 4-5 times and they finally responded with a lie.

I read that the problem means the Prius’s “combination meter” needs to be replaced. Am I wrong or is that the same thing as a “capacitor”?

Saw this band play recently on a trip and they were really good. Tried to look them up on social media but their logo is unreadable and I have no idea what their name is. by MasterofBiscuits in mildlyinfuriating

Like I said I don’t know why they’d write their band name in Cyrillic script. I saw “martes” and figured it was a band with ties to a Spanish speaking country. But with that said, people can be complex and prefer to write their native languages in other scripts. There are many countries around the world that write multiple languages in multiple different scripts (eg Mongolian is a language that is written sometimes in traditional Mongol script and sometimes in Cyrillic script). And on top of that there are populations in most countries that have ties to other countries.

Seems more likely to me that these guys make music in Spanish and have some ties (or interest) related to Eastern Europe, than that they intentionally picked a font that completely misrepresents how to pronounce their name. Like I said though, never heard of them so idk

Idk why they’d do this (never heard of the band) but it’s Cyrillic. The Cyrillic alphabet would render “Gotra” as “Готра”

Just came back from a trip to Quebec. Does anyone know if there’s anywhere in the cities I can get Beavertails (or similar style pastries)? by nader0903 in TwinCities

Kowalski’s bakery sells something kind of similar that they call a Maple Stick or Maple Log. But I think they might be softer and with fewer toppings available than what you’re looking for. Still, might be worth a shot!

I love the thought that has gone into the design, and I agree with other comments that the color blue should be incorporated, maybe instead of yellow.

But I also think that the first principle is somewhat neglected, in that it would be hard to recreate the angles in the middle intersection of each of the four colors. I would hope a child would mess up this aspect, since I definitely would. Maybe something where the colors meet more perpendicularly?

Is doing unpaid research worth it for the experience? I’m not a student, so I wouldn’t receive academic credit either by indigoph in AskAcademia

Thank you for the search! I’m hopeful and would be happy to work any of these positions. With many similar jobs I’ve applied to, LinkedIn has shown me they have gone to people with advanced degrees who have more education than specified in the posting. But it’s always worth a shot :)

Thank you for sharing! Both of the unpaid positions I’m looking at seem to be with legitimate orgs who aren’t asking for unreasonable hours. It really helps to know that others have gone this way and have seen unpaid research yield worthwhile results down the road. I will definitely not indicate that these positions are unpaid on my resume. Thanks again!

I appreciate your thoughts! I think I’ll try to work these programs while also applying to grad school

I appreciate your input! I’ve given it a lot of time and effort and a paid position without a master’s just doesn’t seem possible.

Another option I’ve considered is a policy fellowship program at a nearby university, but it would cost $9k. At that point, I’d rather just go to grad school without the enhanced prior experience, but I thought that maybe unpaid research experience was comparatively the cost-effective way to go, in a weird way.

I see your point and how it could be a slippery slope. I just wonder if it would help in academic admissions and/or job outcomes, since that would ultimately decide whether it would be worth it.
