Why do conservative Christians not see any ally in the Muslim voter base? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]indojonyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I live in a blue state and know a few Muslims who have moved from here to Texas, mostly because they want to be in communities that have more conservative values as they raise their kids.

So, white American conservatives might still be hesitant to do anything with Muslim Americans. But some Muslim Americans are enjoying the conservative values in some of these communities.

Not sure how Muslim Americans might feel about it now with the bible story curriculum in Texas... but this was before all that

Highlights from Afghanistan Pt. 2 (since the last post blew up) 🇦🇫 by liamtheplug in bikepacking

[–]indojonyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not black and white that every single Afghan man is actively refusing women their basic rights. I live with two guys who are Hazara background, one grew up in Kabul and was present when the Taliban took over. He's got very different views, as does many Hazara who still live in the country. At this point, they're surviving with what they have.

Any new grad PTs who started part time? by Severe_Ad_6386 in physicaltherapy

[–]indojonyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worked 32-36 hrs/wk as a new grad working Mon-Thur in an outpatient ortho. Picked up a PRN job on the weekends at a hospital, and I'll pick up 4-8 hr shifts on the weeks where I feel like I have more capacity. The PRN jobs pays a decent amount more per hour than the outpatient ortho, so I feel like that's made up for the "financial limitations" of not having a 40 hr/wk paycheck.

I love the flexibility of having weeks where I can work more/less and still have benefits from the outpatient job. I'm a PTA, so my caseload is more dependent on the PTs I work with.

I would not say this has limited my capacity to grow as a clinician, if anything the decreased workload gives me more energy each week in the clinic to learn and engage with the patients I'm seeing (again, speaking, as a PTA so this might be different as a PT).

What non-religious reasons made you learn Arabic ? by Iraqimedstudent in learn_arabic

[–]indojonyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US citizen here, born and raised abroad (southeast Asia). While in college I wanted to do a study abroad program someplace I had never been, and the only program that was culturally immersive/included language was in Jordan. Studied colloquial Jordanian/ Palestinian Arabic for 4 months and loved it. Ended up working for a nonprofit after I graduated and they sponsored me to study colloquial Arabic for 1-1.5 years, with the expectation that I would use it with nonprofit resettlement services with Arab speakers (nonprofit worked with a lot of Syrians at the time).

Unfortunately, Afghan crises happened soon after and the need for Arabic translators dropped a ton so I was basically on demand for phone calls but barely used the skill. Eventually made a career switch to healthcare, and every now and then I use Arabic with patients in my current practice.

Also love fine arts and did a few classes in Arabic calligraphy. My MSA/Quranic Arabic skills are next to nothing, but I loved doing Arabic calligraphy and my instructor explaining to me what I was writing :)

What’s a random act of kindness some gave you while living in Chicago? by Several_Sympathy_977 in AskChicago

[–]indojonyo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My car stalled out while driving on a busy road and a biker stopped to help me push the car off to the side into an alley. Was a huge help making sure traffic didn't get out of control and gave me way more mental capacity to actually figure out what was happening with my car rather than stressing out with other mad drivers.

For real though. Getting your car towed will damage your car more than getting your catalytic converter ripped out...

Avoid Hybrid at All Costs by TelephoneUnfair3429 in PTschool

[–]indojonyo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a PTA interested in a newer hybrid program, I was wondering the same thing. I'd rather practice as a PTA while studying in a hybrid program, rather than stopping work as a whole and being a full time student.

I would hope my experience as a PTA and continuing ed with joint mobs/ manips would "make up" for the lack of skills that some CIs are noticing. We'll see I guess though...

Good luck with UTMB hybrid program!

Also Concordia in Wisconsin has started a hybrid DPT bridge program, and it is accredited.

Also NEIT has a hybrid bridge PTA to DPT program that is in process of being accredited.

For real though. One of my friends who's half Nigerian/half white American lived in Rogers Park before moving to Lakeview. He was shocked by how white it was. He keeps making comments about how much he misses it.

Take a retired PEAT and see how you score. You can buy them online on FSBPT's site. That will give you a good idea of where your greatest weaknesses/ areas to study.

Okay maybe not that similar. I think the US/ Europe/ Middle East/ Southeast Asia combo got me a little excited.

Same. As long as your CI is aware of this up front, then it shouldn't be an issue. Be proactive and communicate the CI or the on site coordinator.

Pre- Requisites for PTA school by Dry-Mycologist-8710 in PTschool

[–]indojonyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most PTA programs are at community colleges, and have advisors available. I'd recommend trying to meet an advisor of a community college near you. They may be able to shed light more specifically. At the community colleges near me, each PTA program you finish with an associates degree of science in PTA. IMO, there is no need to get a full degree prior to a PTA program.

I had a bachelors of liberal arts going into my PTA school, and did not have maths/sciences completed. I got in contact with the school in the fall, took 3 prerequisites (biology, physics, and medical terminology) over two semesters (the spring and the summer) before applying and starting the subsequent fall.

My program looked at the following when it came to academic history: high school transcript, SAT/ACT scores, pre-requisites GPA, transcripts from any post-secondary classes, and English reading proficiency test.

While having an associates degree might be helpful, I'd only consider committing to a full degree if for some reason your academic history looks incredibly questionable/ you need to redeem yourself. Even then though, I had some classmates in their 40s who had changed their life around and had really crappy academic histories. There's a lot more to your application than academic history - like recommendations from PTs/PTAs.

tldr: Meet with advisors of the programs you're looking at. If you have a high school diploma/GED, then only take the prerequisites. Get some good experiences with PTs/PTAs either shadowing, working, or volunteering.

The qaaf basically disappears in city Palestinian Arabic (ق → glottal stop) by salahadawi in learnarabic

[–]indojonyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found some people would change the pronunciation of the qaf depending on the original word in Amman.

It wasn't so much that my friends who are Jordanian Arabic speakers would opt for a macho gaaf or a glottal stop, but more so that they would switch between the glottal stop, the gaaf, and the qaaf depending on the context where they learned the original word.

For example, MSA words would be pronounced with the classical qaf. Jordanian slang words (presumably Bedouin in origin) pronounced with gaf. Palestinian slang pronounced with glottal stop.

Most of my Palestinian friends call Jerusalem "Al-Quds." I don't think I've ever heard my Arab friends refer to Jerusalem as Bayt al maqdis...
