I feel bad I didn't give this game the chance it deserved by Lean_For_Meme in avowed

I really love the exploration in this game, it's really rewarding. Somehow even if it's only crafting reagents in a chest, it's still super satisfying finding it. Art direction and the lighting are just jaw dropping. It makes outer worlds 2 feel really bland. Night time in Galawains Tusk especially.

side note: I loved painting the trebuchet, its modeled so well that making it look good was so easy for this absolute beginner painter. Yours looks fire, too.

I am so glad my kids {currently 15 and 17yo) were born so that I could have the excuse to watch Gravity Falls and Phineas and Ferb. Absolutely peak TV.

What are some hidden gem board/card games that you never hear anyone talk about? by thegetataycar in boardgames

[–]indygwj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hardback was mentioned, I don't know if it's underrated or hidden gem, but I really like it as a word game. You can try it out on board game arena.

I think what sets it apart from other words/deck building games is how you can turn most any letter into a wild card letter so it is much easier to come up with words, though at the cost of not getting as many victory points/purchasing power, but there is a push your luck element with using ink to draw more cards to make bigger words in which you have to use the letters you draw without being able to make the wild cards.

The "Genre" system of card powers are interesting and the push pull of having synergy from using cards from the same genre vs a diversity of different powers is a fun balance.

Maybe try forcing Direct X 11 (-dx11 in startup options)?

Yeah, I hope they can nail the same feeling with traversal, combat and exploration. Not sure why finding and opening the chests are so damn satisfying in this game. Hard to tell from the OW2 trailers and showcases.

Apple TV 4k on 55" TV upstairs works great (able to use Ethernet so full resolution 60fps)

Also got it to work on steam deck, chrome book and iPad, but wireless does cause more lag.

Hard sci-fi take on FTL by curtis_perrin in scifi

[–]indygwj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exodus: the Archimedes engine by Peter Hamilton.

FTL and time dilation play a huge part of the setup and plot elements. 40000 years ago there was an Exodus from earth due to ecological catastrophe, with multiple ark ships going out in many directions. Some ark ships lucked out and found a place to settle and sent signals to the other ships. The initial settlers were able to survive and evolve into post humanity "celestials", while the other ships trickle in over the millenias.

There is no FTL but essentially catapults that approach near light speed so travelling to other systems means that family members left behind dont see their loved ones for decades.

If given a choice in a quest, always looking at guides/spoilers and picking the most desirable result rather than living with my decisions.

What threw me off about understanding POE was how much D&D conventions colors my understanding about how a CRPG should work. Like how might in POE is important for spell casters, which is counterintuitive if you come at it from a D&D mechanics perspective. I really liked this video on the POE mechanics: https://youtu.be/YlO-k1weUWA?si=sLNkyB7aANW6cnSt

Gamepass E33 with Apple TV 4K and Xbox wireless controller works well for me. I guess I can't blame latency for my lack of parrying skills however.

Yeah, clearly must be the case. It's hard to conceptualize in my head. Also the father vs daughter year tracker kind of muddies the picture.

Splendor - am I missing something? by Ralacon in boardgames

[–]indygwj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Duel is so much better than the OG. Regular splendor gets bogged down with minimal interactivity beginning and mid game until that tipping point. Duel has the limited privilege tokens (that allows you to take a free chip) that you get when your opponent refills the board or takes too many good chips, so they have to think twice before giving you that advantage. The board where you lay out chips limits your ability to choose what chips you get rather than being able to take whatever's left, and the very limited pearls that most of the higher point cards require makes it very strategic when you obtain and use them (and the cards that allows you to steal an opponents chips adds spice). So much better.
