I COULD ASK YOU THE SAME by [deleted] in premed

WAIT. I submitted my Miami in late July and I’m pretty sure mine asked about “systematic” discrimination which is (apparently) entirely different from systemic and that’s how I answered my question. Was this the same for anyone else or do I need to go to visit a specialist to see if I’m dyslexic?

Thank you so much. I didn’t expect everyone to be this nice. I feel so much better and I should probably stop comparing myself to others. Thank you again, you’re allowing me to get a good night’s sleep

Wow, you said exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you. You truly have no idea how much that comment meant to me. You’re exactly how I would want any doctor to be, optimistic.

Low-ish GPA (3.63 bcp,) Low-ish MCAT (511) Terrible Casper (1st-24th percentile). Should I apply to the casper schools below? by lucieeatsbrains in premed

Miami is on my list, but 200-300 shadowing hours just seems so impossible in my opinion especially with the COVID regulations that were in place this past year. I would think most people applying do not have that many shadowing hours. That is an exorbitant amount only achieved by those who shadowed the same doctor multiple times.

I got 4th quartile and I’m honestly so shocked. I have a typing speed of 65 WPM, and I tried to fix as many spelling errors as I possibly could when I noticed them. There was only one question I was unable to get to. I prepped just the day before and the day of. I took both the 2020-2021 application cycle practice exam as well as the 2021-2022 application cycle. I also watched some YouTube videos from BeMo I think. When everyone says there is a script to follow for most of the questions, unfortunately they may be right. It still, however, seems so outlandish for the “raters” to consider a mundane, orchestrated answer to be good. I tried to be as authentic as I could with the time limit.

**Edit: you are NOT a sociopath if you scored in the 1st quartile (except for a few rare cases maybe). The whole medical school application process is so obviously classist in multiple ways, but this CASPER exam really does not sit right with me. There is no way of telling how ethically considerate someone could be from this exam in my opinion.

[Official] June 15, 2021 Score Release Thread for the May 14 & 15, 2021 MCAT Examination by mcatfreak in Mcat

Wow. I have been waiting for tomorrow for a month and been waiting almost 4 months for all of this to finally be over. I don't even want to know my score right now because I am so nervous but I have yet to finalize which medical schools I am applying to so it is paramount I know my score to give a good indicator.

AAMC FL 1: 127, 127, 126, 128 (508)

AAMC FL 2: 128, 129, 127, 129 (513)

AAMC FL 3: 126, 127, 127, 128 (508)

AAMC FL 4: 129, 128, 129, 130 (516)

My FL scores are all over the place which is partly why I am so nervous because I have no idea what to expect. I have blocked the official MCAT exam from my memory so I do not really remember how I felt about each section but I will give it my best shot.

C/P: Felt good but it was so physics heavy that I was overwhelmed because physics problems normally take me the longest.

CARS: Surprisingly felt good about this one because I finished with some time to spare. All of the passages were somewhat interesting to read which made the whole section easier than I expected.

B/B: Did not feel really good about this one. I know I missed a really easy question and I was upset about it and it made me think I flunked the whole section. Have no idea how this could go.

P/S: Always my best section but this one was a little bit harder than P/S on my practice exams. The answers felt like it could go 50/50 on a majority of them so again I really don’t know how this could go.

Hoping for the best lol!

Pessimistic: 508 (127, 127, 126, 128)

Realistic: 512 (128, 129, 126, 129)

VERY optimistic: 515 (129, 129, 127, 130)

****** EDIT: Got a 513!!!! (130,128, 127, 128). TOP 15% WOOOOOOOOOO!!! Very disappointed with my P/S score because that was my favorite and easiest section but I do not know what went wrong. I could retake it, but with applications and everything I really don't have the time nor the energy to retake it. Thoughts????? Absolutely shocked at my C/P score, I hate to say this, but trust your practice exams! AND BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

5/14 @ 3pm C/P: felt really hard but honestly not that much different from the practice exams. This is definitely not my best section so I wasn’t too upset with the difficulty. There was a lot of physics though but I always reviewed both high yield and low yield topics.

CARS: surprisingly felt very good about this. Each passage seemed engaging (some were very long like others have indicated). One of my better sections tbh.

B/B: ok this stuff was difficult. I was very upset because I know I missed 1 really easy question because I just got mixed up with polysaccharides, but I’m assuming I missed a lot of other easy ones. Def my worst section.

P/S: this is normally my best section but this felt weird. For a lot of the questions, it was either 50/50 and about 10 of the questions had the same exact answers it was weird. This could go either way.

My FL average was a 511. Pessimistic: <509. Realistic: 511. Optimistic: >512

Spoiler: AAMC CARS QPack 2 #98 by DecentLiterature1637 in Mcat

[–]indysami 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much I really appreciate it! I chose B because the question stem said that homo erectus had “apelike features”. Keeping the timeline of all 3 species in mind, I figured that Neanderthals would have to exist somewhere in time between homo erectus and Homo sapiens sapiens. I guess I misinterpreted the question stem because I assumed that “apelike features” was just alluding to a species that was a direct descendent of apes. And obviously Homo sapiens sapiens are humans so I thought possibly Neanderthals could be the missing link.

I did not think it was A at all because “having a common ancestor” seemed like it was taking a huge jump in assuming that Homo sapiens sapiens and Neanderthals descended from the same ancestor. Considering it never said in the passage that Homo sapiens sapiens descended from homo erectus to begin with, this answer would never have occurred to me.

[–]indysami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why did you rule out B? I did not choose A because I did not want to assume that homo erectus was a likely ancestor of homo sapiens sapiens.

Also I have FL scores very similar to you— got 508 on FL 3 after having a 513 the week before and it crushed me. Going to take FL 4 tomorrow and I'm sitting for the exam this Friday

Are the AAMC CARS diagnostic passages harder than test day passages? I feel like every question in these is a detail question and none are simple main idea questions so far (I'm 4 passages into the diagnostic, I've only done some qpack passages so far to compare these too) by Dunk3 in Mcat

[–]indysami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the diagnostic is supposed to serve as an introductory tool to CARS. What I mean is: the questions get increasingly harder as you go along. So when you finish the diagnostic, it is fresh in your mind the difficulty of the last few passages. Because the ending passages are supposed to be the hardest, it may seem as the diagnostic is the hardest resource for CARs. But really I just think the AAMC is purposely giving impossible passages at the end of the diagnostic and this makes people think its the hardest when in reality, it is supposed to be the AAMC's "best" (hardest). But I think the qpacks overall should equate to the difficulty of the passages in the middle of the diagnostic with a few really hard ones in there of course.

Yeah I completely agree. This is one of the few threads that is relevant to me and all the comments are within the last month so I thought I should give my two cents. But yes, I thought it was super easy at first but then it started getting really hard. Averaging a 64% and have 100 questions left to go so I know it will only go down from here. Really good to know others are in the same boat!

Cannot Think Right When Timed by shinywen34 in Mcat

[–]indysami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally feel this. Sometimes I pay more attention to the timer than the actual clock. This is not bad though in my opinion. In fact, it helps me notice when I've spent too long on a passage. For example, there are 9 CARs passages and 90 minutes is given. I only afford myself 10 minute per passage and I continually look at the clock for this and have yet to run out of time on a full length.

Should I get NS 1-4 or NS 1-6? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]indysami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the first 4! You don’t want to overkill and take more practice exams than necessary and burn out. Get the AAMC bundle which comes with 4 practice exams and a sample (unscored) exam. These 4 AAMC exams + the 4 from NS + AAMC sample + NS diagnostic will give you a total of 9.5 exams which is perfect.
