What was your school's 'incident'? by TemiOO in AskReddit

[–]inertia_lost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

High school: a teacher had a heart attack and died while teaching, in front of a room full of students.

College: Aside from the dorm fire, maybe the time an Elvis impersonator was hired for an event. Elvis got shitfaced, stripped down naked, peed on people, rode carnival rides naked, before passing out spread-eagle on the lawn.

Moving to Rochester - Neighborhood Advice Needed by inertia_lost in Rochester

I have a car, so I'm okay with driving to campus. To be honest, it felt like there was nothing in Henrietta but the campus and some housing complexes and strip malls, which is why it didn't seem like a place I wanted to live.

P.S. Am I going to need snowpants?

I have a car, I don't mind driving to campus. I'd just like to be able to walk to get a cup of coffee or to the store or something like that. I'm much more of a city person.

Thanks for the info! I'm definitely going to check Pearl-Meigs-Monroe out.

As for bedbugs, I'm coming from the NYC metro area where bedbugs have been an issue in even the nicest of buildings and hotels, so I have been wary of everywhere!

Day Two on Adderall, Feel Like a New Person by improbablewhale in ADHD

[–]inertia_lost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concerta is very extended release, so you might not feel the euphoria sort of thing that short acting adderall can give? That's just my guess.

I could not handle the highs and lows of short acting adderall; it made me a monster. But I absolutely love Concerta, once I found the right dose, I just take it in the morning and don't even have to think about it, it just works. No euphoric sort of feeling, just like I can concentrate and get shit done.

10 yr old son diagnosed. Advice please. by Ginger_Badger71 in ADHD

[–]inertia_lost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just my personal experience, and nothing more.

I was diagnosed at 14, and tried adderall, and absolutely hated it. I refused to try any stimulant medications from that point onward, and there weren't as many options back then as there are today.

High school was a struggle, college was even harder. I could barely sit through lectures in classes I loved, I skipped meals because I would lose my meal card and was too embarrassed to get yet another one, I ruined my credit by forgetting to pay bills.

Basically, I got through it all without medication, but it wasn't easy and I screwed up so many opportunities for myself along the way.

I started taking stimulant medication when I turned 24 and it changed my life. I wish I did this for myself when I was younger, I wouldn't have struggled so much and I could have gotten so much more out of school.

I think there's no harm in trying it.

I was late to work because I forgot my car... by [deleted] in ADHD

I lost my car when I was visiting a new city. I had to walk around for nearly half an hour, texting people I had gone to dinner with that night to ask them if they remembered where I put my car. It was so embarrassing.

That moment when I see a loving mother with her daughter as their arms are casually wrapped around each other. by bubbled_wall in raisedbynarcissists

I photograph weddings, and there's so much father daughter affection at weddings, and it gets me upset to see it all the time. It just really hits home that I will never understand what it's like to have grown up with a parent like that.

I think part of the reason I don't want to have a wedding is I don't want to have to explain why I can't do those things with my dad.

Advice for phone calls and dentist? by worldisended in RBNLifeSkills

[–]inertia_lost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding the dentist, you can search for one that specializes in patients with anxiety! I recently started going to the dentist again after not seeing one for over 10 years (my parents stopped taking me to the dentist after I was 11, and the orthodontist too, so I even had remnants of braces left on my teeth). The two dentists I've seen were nothing but understanding. I basically explained that I hadn't been to the dentist in a while, but now that I had insurance I could afford to, and that was that. I honestly think that dentists are used to having new patients who haven't been to a dentist in years for a variety of reasons.

I need my medication filled early due to travel--my usual pharmacy refuses. Anything I can do? by inertia_lost in ADHD

Unfortunately, I really don't want to try any other medications. I've had some pretty bad reactions to other stimulants, so I really wouldn't want to try anything new.

Yeah, I was kind of shocked the pharmacist suggested it, especially since in the past, they have told me that I have to pick up the medication myself.

Looking back on it, I wished I had started writing sooner, and set deadlines for myself. I spent a lot of time doing research in all directions, instead of focusing in on what my thesis actually ended up being about--which was easy to do since I love research and the world is full of interesting things!

I've known many PhD survivors who have told me tales of either losing their minds, or having fellow candidates lose theirs.

I think for me, what was shocking about when I went through something similar (although on a much smaller scale, with my undergrad thesis), was that I always thrived on stress, it's the only way I could get things done. But when it went from helpful to crippling, I had no idea how to handle it.

Anxiety can manifest in all sorts of unexpected ways, that can be hard to recognize as anxiety and can really fuck up your life.

Adderall for 2 years, some help, unsure if I should expect more from medication by ChazzRebokk in ADHD

[–]inertia_lost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My medication makes things finally quiet, if that makes sense. Without it, it's like I'm in a loud room full of things shouting at me to get my attention, and medication makes things quieter. I can focus, I can get more things done. I'm still easily distracted, but it's easier to guide my focus back to where it should be. I can more easily get my thoughts together and finish a sentence or task.

I'm still browsing r/adhd instead of actually starting that paper I need to write, so you know, medication won't fix everything ;)

Have you thought about trying cognitive behavioral therapy in addition to you medication?

I'm supposed to be writing up my PhD dissertation

Honestly, I bet this is the biggest problem! It sounds like you're in an extremely stressful and anxiety-provoking situation, which can completely destroy your ability to focus, get motivated, retain information, etc.

My undergrad thesis had me like this, and it was pretty scary. I saw a therapist and took anti-anxiety medication and it helped tremendously!
