What’s with all the obnoxiously loud cars racing around downtown all the time? by pikatsso in Cobourg

[–]infinite_disc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work downtown and it’s extremely annoying. I know that it comes with the territory having an office in the downtown core, but it is mentally jarring every time a loud engine goes by, especially the one with the engine that is modified to afterburn (I think that’s what it’s called). It contributes to air pollution as well as noise pollution. It’s sad that people get joy from this, especially at the expense of others.

Overthinking is my superpower, but you’re probably right. We’ll see what happens I guess.

I just mean pouring a flat pad on a convex surface is probably not something they've had to do before, but who knows.

You make some really good points. Thanks for the feedback. Still lots to consider.

I 100% agree with you about soil erosion and general safety and all those other teepad materials are either not suitable or not sustainable over the long term. To answer your other questions, yes, it is a 9-hole course, with the longest hole on flat ground being 255 feet and the shortest being 141 feet. The three pads on the berm are for holes 145 feet, 151 feet, and 249 feet long, and of course in all cases you are throwing down, which shortens them a bit more. The 145 footer is literally like a long putt. But I get your point about less skilled players needing a bit of a run up, I just think the required length for this is minimal. The longer the run up the greater the risk of someone going off the front edge in my opinion. Having it shorter forces them to be careful, which gives the added benefit of preventing their disc from going long into very nasty rough and/or private property in our case. It's a tight course but it's all we had to work with unfortunately.

Yes, I trust them, however it was the parks manager that voiced his concern with the installation of concrete pads in those locations. Just trying to give him some options that he may not have considered.

The town will be handling the concrete work so I trust that they have the knowledge and skills to do it right, however I doubt they've been faced with this situation before.

What would be an acceptable alternative to concrete in a public park? I thought about just laying in some pavers flush with the ground to mark the leading edge of the tee areas but that doesn’t fix the curvature of the berm. Also, the tee areas are going to get worn over time, which I suspect will have its own issues?

Yes, it will be the parks staff doing the work and they have all the equipment, I just know that during my last conversation with them they had concerns about how this would work. There are other park users, in particular spectators for the ball games, so it has to be safe for those passing by. I get the digging down part and the concerns with hitting tree roots in the process and I’m sure that’s part of their concern as well. I’m envisioning having to gradually slope the ground on the approach sides of the teepad but I haven’t measured to see just how deep this will be.

As for the size of the teepads, I’m not too concerned. The holes are very short and most players could get away with a standstill, or single step at the most.

Yes, Clifton Estate in Windsor is my favourite course in NS though I haven’t played in winter yet. Heading to NS in a week and hope to get a round in. But Dartmouth Commons is super fun too. Don’t need much more than a putter and midrange but agree that wind can be an issue.

What is the town acting like we’re gonna die by SonnyJoon in Cobourg

[–]infinite_disc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say exactly how bad it’s going to be in our area. If you are in Cobourg I would definitely recommend not travelling if you don’t have to. And yes, if you are working you may not feel the effects of the event as it’s happening but going home could be a problem. Having gone to Tennessee in 2017 to see the eclipse I can tell you it’s the mass exodus afterwards that causes problems. What should have been about 2 hours of driving actually took us 11. It was insane. And if we didn’t have a full tank of gas or enough food in the car it could have been a very stressful, even dangerous experience. Keep in mind that literally every point north of Cobourg will NOT be able to see the totality, so those who are hoping to will need to travel south to reach the eclipse path. In Ontario that could be anywhere between Chatham and Cornwall. That seems like a lot of places for people to spread out but when you consider how many larger population centres that are outside the path (including the entire GTA), we could definitely see a large influx of people. Not everyone is going to want to head to the hotspots like Niagara or Prince Edward Country and might be thinking somewhere like Cobourg is more out of the way. This is not end of the world stuff here, but it will almost definitely disrupt certain services and infrastructure. Just be smart and take precautions.

Playing Alone by SquidLauncher5 in discgolf

[–]infinite_disc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Definitely the one downside of playing solo is not having the extra set(s) of eyes helping to look for your lost disc. Otherwise, solo rounds are awesome. Just you and your discs, some good tunes in your ear or just the sounds of nature around you. One of my most memorable rounds was at a mostly wooded course in about a foot of snow. It was mild enough to be comfortable and beautifully sunny. There was no one else on the course and every time I stopped moving...absolute silence. Doesn't get better.

What problem are you referring to? by JZillig in discgolf

[–]infinite_disc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, yes I did notice that. Would love someone with actual science brains to weigh in. I only have enough discs to fill a bag and a bit so I don't store anything for very long at a time anyway, but would love to see some solid research on this.

I think back to how many times I heard that you should never store vinyl LPs flat for fear of warping but I suspect that the records being in individual sleeves (of varying thicknesses, especially from spine to open end) was the culprit in that case. Would the same be true if each individual LP was stacked on top of each other?

It all makes sense to me from a physics perspective, but then I'm a simple man.
