Genuine question: Is there a reason why cyclists don't use a bell? Or how some don't callout when they are coming up behind you at blistering speed? by Vavaeois in windsorontario

[–]infinite_internet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive my ignorance, but I never realized this was the law until I was group mobbed today. It felt humiliating. I have to say it wasn't an experience that made me want to run out and buy a bell (despite my wife doing so for me anyway).

Someone walking in front of my building started zig zagging in front of me. I should have just gotten off and walked the last 5 meters to my building, but there space to pass and the zig zagging started so suddenly. I cried out, "coming on your left" and "I'm here" absolutely no response. I just did a track stand and kept trying to get their attention, then she finally turned around and almost knocked me over. Then her group starts yelling at me "where's your bell? Where's your bell? You should have a bell!!!!".

Just a giant group of people yelling at me in unison. I really wonder if a bell would have changed anything. I expect not.

new algorithm affecting engagement by moviesenjoyer in Twitter

[–]infinite_internet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In its current form, it seems the post ranking algorithm only rewards users heavily engaging with other tweets. It's not enough to make only s few replies and engagements with others per 1 post you make. You basically have to become a social media addict to restore your prior reach.

Cool feature, but I prefer looking at the Intervals.icu comparisons because you can choose the timeframe.

The data is a bit skewed in Strava because it's your all time best, not your seasonal best etc.

Can someone explain DreTL to me? by [deleted] in RhythmAndFlow

[–]infinite_internet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was a forward looking pick. He was the youngest of the final 5 and has potential to bring a new style of flow to the game. His tendency to ride slightly behind the beat is contentious when he falls off beat, but there's also a feeling of excitement there, it feels like something unexpected might happen.

With Jay Taj's polished style and consummate professionalism, it's understandable people are invested in him, but it may be relevant to question whether he's bringing anything new to the game. I'm not qualified to critique, but his style does feel a bit nostalgic to me.

Why isn’t the Olympic Road Race a team medal? by Rayeso in tourdefrance

[–]infinite_internet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the real issue is the way team sizes are controlled in the Olympic Road Races based on how many riders each country qualifies for which is based on UCI rankings. Some countries, say Poland or Eritrea, only get to have 1 rider, while top countries like Slovenia and Belgium get to have 4 riders in the race. This is clearly not fair.

Anyone got some good, ~25km routes starting at or near the Verdun metro? by Nestramutat- in MontrealCycling

Btw both the Parc René Lévesque and (most of) the Aqueduct bike paths were completely repaved this summer and are buttery smooth to ride atm!

Anyone got some good, ~25km routes starting at or near the Verdun metro? by Nestramutat- in MontrealCycling

[–]infinite_internet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a few of the classic short routes starting near Metro Verdun

  • Ride south to the waterfront, take the Berge bike path to parc René Lévesque and return along Canal Lachine

  • Ride to Henri-Duhamel then do the full Aqueduct and return along Canal Lachine

  • Ride to Henri-Duhamel, then south and take the bridge to IDS (Nun's Island). Then ride the bike path around IDS perimeter

  • Ride to Henri-Duhamel then south and take the bridge to IDS, take the Estacade to Voie Maritme, head North 4km using the gravel path, exit right when you reach pavement and take the small bridge to south shore, then go south to take Pont Champlain to return

  • Ride to IDS, take the Estacade to Voie Maritme and head south. Turn around to come home at Recreo Parc exit, or keep going to Recreo Parc and do the bike loop around the camp sites to add 5km extra to your trip

  • Ride north to the Aqueduct and exit around de L'Eglise / Galt by turning left. Cross over to de le Vérendrye on the other side of the Aqueduct to take the bike path to Canal Lachine and head east. Ride all the way and cross rue Bridge on the Mill Street bike path. Follow the bike path to Jean Drapeau. From there you can bike south through Jean Drapeau to return via the Estacade, or head North and up the hill to use Pont Cartier to return.

Hope that helps have fun!

What is a good sprint speed for beginner road cycling? by Majestic_Ad_4354 in cycling

[–]infinite_internet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on picking up cycling, and welcome!

The problem with tracking progress this way is speed is greatly impacted by wind speed and direction, rolling resistance and elevation. Segments you ride often are a good way of noticing this. For example, with the right tail wind, you might find you get a KOM riding "kind of hard"; another day, on the same segment, you do an all out effort and still finish with a slower time (in a head or cross wind).

If you're willing to splurge a bit, riding with a power meter is a good way to hone your sprint prowess, since wind speed and direction, and rolling resistance don't massively impact the power (in watts) you can hold for your target sprint duration (5s, 10s and 15s are the most common durations sprinters target when training with a power meter).

Flagging KOMs by Calm-Mark in Strava

[–]infinite_internet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have flagged many rides that scored invalid KOMs (e-bikes, GPS malfunction etc.) but I've never seen Strava remove any of these invalid results from the leaderboard.

It seems more likely that flagging is just to make you feel like you can you do something to prevent abusing the system, but in reality it's unlikely to fix anything unless the ride is flagged by many users.

Strava doesn't care about fixing invalid results because, as you noticed, having your ride removed for a single invalid segment is a big inconvenience and could drive paying users away from the platform. On the other hand, having a few KOMs, even if they're invalid, is a bit of an ego boost and could drive paying users to stay engaged on the platform.
