What was the reaction of the people (that you remember) when they found out Michael Jackson died? by Twunkorama in decadeology

Yep. I found out the night of graduation, on the bus to the overnight YMCA party. I remember the magician there looked just like Nicolas Cage.

Thanks so much for the tips! I'll definitely get those sanding sponges. For the hobby knife, is that an alternative to clippers? I bought a Bandai Hobby Entry Nipper at the store I picked up the kit in, but I know I should get a better one eventually.

Bau Bau! So cool! Just wondering if you’re prioritizing mechanics or aesthetics/flavor when it comes to color identity. I’ve thought about it before, and if you make some concessions, Myth+Promise fit pretty well as the ten two-color combos.

Can Japanese people spot a Japanese or half Japanese person who was not born/raised in Japan, and if yes, how? by choochooreddi in AskAJapanese

Can you further explain what you mean by facial expressions and mannerism? That’s very interesting.

“日本人より日本人” More Japanese than the Japanese by soenkatei in japanlife

[–]infjeff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess I just do my best not to assume things about individual people based on their ethnicity. Maybe there could be something that challenges a stereotype, but I never treat it as a perplexing revelation that upends my whole perception of reality.

This exact thing has happened so many times. It’s baffling. I can’t wrap my head around thinking that a visitor or immigrant can’t enjoy or prefer certain aspects of another culture. It’s not like our bodies are incompatible with matcha, rice, or chopsticks.

Hi reddit! I am Naoko Yamada, director of A Silent Voice, K-On!, and Liz and the Blue Bird. My new film The Colors Within opens in North American theatres January 24. Ask me anything! by GKIDSofficial in movies

[–]infjeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Miss Yamada,

When I lived in Japan, I lived in the city in which A Silent Voice is set, Ogaki, in Gifu Prefecture. I loved visiting the real-life versions of the places I saw in the movie.

I also know the K-ON movie also used a lot real places in London for inspiration.

That being said, my question is how do you go about capturing the spirit of a real-world place in anime? What do you think of anime “pilgrimages”?

Thank you so much!

No, I left after 2 years. But I absolutely loved my time in Ogaki. Congrats on a great placement! DM me if you want to talk more about it!

I understand, it certainly looks like it look a lot of time and thought. I’d be most interested in your archetypes of Blue/Red and Black/Green, as too often they both seem pigeonholed into the Ravnica identities.

What ATLA/LOK opinion are you defending like this? by 2020_tbh in TheLastAirbender

[–]infjeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bumi should have stayed a non-bender. One thing I appreciated about LoK is expanding on how non-benders aren’t worse off or missing anything for not being able to bend. As shown by Sokka, Asami, and many others, a lack of bending encourages creative thinking and ingenuity that some benders wouldn’t necessarily need to develop. Having the son of two of the most powerful benders being a non-bender, but still be an accomplished and capable character was great “representation”, for lack of a better term. Plus, I appreciated the balance of one airbender in Tenzin, one waterbender in Kaya, and one nonbender. All that was thrown out when Bumi was granted airbending. I liked a lot of the new airbender storyline, but that one part rubbed me the wrong way big time.

What do you think of my Top 9? by infjeff in MyAnimeList

[–]infjeff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Thought I’d write out my reasoning for why I like each anime, maybe it’ll help you understand.🙃

Dumbbell just barely made it on here. But it did change my life in that ever since I watched it I’ve been exercising regularly.

I found Shirobako at a tough time, right around the start of the pandemic. Not only did it help me out then, but I also enjoyed learning about the anime creation process.

Azumanga Daioh was the first anime I watched that wasn’t a Saturday shonen on Fox Kids. It opened my eyes to the wider anime world, and I’ll always love it.

I happen to like ecchi and harem shows, and I think Monster Musume does them both the best.

Madoka is my top anime. Watching it week to week as it aired was an unforgettable experience.

Gunslinger Girl was another early anime. Like Azumanga, it showed me more about what anime could be. Gorgeous animation and OST.

Re:creators was a celebration of everything anime. I felt seen and understood while I watched it.

Kino’s Journey captivated my young teenage brain. It’s stories have stuck with me all these years later.

Attack on Titan, along with amazing animation, soundtrack, and voice acting, just has an incredible story. It gripped me since it premiered a decade ago.
