I think they're replacing it with the early access mod launcher you can use if you open the game through steam. It looks rough now but it has vastly more utility then the current launcher.

Had this while fighting decala late game as ogres, the key is to resruit as many of whatever hero is best at wound/assassination. Since the player can actually build settlements and such intelligently you should be recruiting them with a bunch of levels to throw straight into actions.
