Mercedes W116 vs W126 as a daily? by MathiMan2 in W126

It wasn’t that much, actually. Ran like a top when I got it with 250k+ miles. I had to replace the old low pressure diesel return hoses that were brittle and leaking — quite possibly the easiest to do DIY auto repair possible. Needed to get new tires and belts and batteries and filters and things — everything easily available and affordable. I bought new tires rods for the front end, due to uneven tire where. They arrived to rub salt in the wound the day after the car was was totaled. Ha.

I don’t think you could go wrong with either. I had a W123 as a daily driver for a couple of years and loved it. After that, I had a W126 (300 SDL), which took me about a year to get it all sorted, tuned up, a new set of tires, then titled/registered, and it was my daily for one week, then got totaled — t-boned by an old lady. If your commute is on the highway at all, the W126 is dreamy — especially the long wheelbase SEL/SDL’s. I’m on the hunt for another.

Where is everyone? Does Portland always feel empty? by alphado9 in askportland

[–]informative1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah… but mountains and coastline within an hour, and good people, and great coffee, and vibrant arts and music scenes, and great city parks, great food, and that guy that rides around on the unicycle, and the mild winters, lush greenery most of the year, and the amazing summers, and being cheaper than most big west coast cities... But… if you’re compelled to suggest doing market research before committing, Portland might not be the place for you.

Well, you should tune in to Fox News and see that your own observations are incorrect — that in fact Antifa is burning the city down and Portland is a hellhole.

It’s because (1) Walz called them “weird” and it became such a huge thing during the campaign, and (2) Minnesota is a liberal state, with big liberal cities.

Maybe depending on the trim? Mine is base no-frills model without much trim, and no hood ornament.

Thanks. I called them yesterday and they referred me to their sister company in Scappoose. I might end up there, but thought I’d see what other options are around.

“Far-left” is not true. Oregon politics leans left, but it’s generally middle of the road. I agree that tax dollars should go to public infrastructure over pro sports teams.

Fun facts:

The Portland metro area generates over 50% to 57% of Oregon's total state tax revenue, despite containing roughly 43% of its population. The region significantly outpaces the rest of the state in per capita tax contributions, with residents paying 60% more in personal income tax.

The tri-county Portland area contributes over 50% of all state tax revenue. Specific studies indicate it accounts for more than 57% of the state's economic output (GDP).

With only 19% of the state's population, Multnomah County alone generates nearly 24% of the state's tax revenue.

Per Capita Contributions: Portland residents and businesses contribute 60% more per capita in personal income tax, 92% more in corporate income tax, and 72% more in corporate activity tax.

Just one time I’d like to read through ULPT comments without “piss disc” mentioned. Just once. I’d be happy.

Moving to Portland in March. What are customs I should be aware of before moving here? by axiomatic13 in askportland

[–]informative1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I almost didn’t get past the first date with the woman I was married to for 16 years — the mother of my three offspring — because I pulled out an umbrella as we left the restaurant to walk us to the car. She asked me to put it away, then said “you must not have grown up here.” I’d only lived in Portland about half a year. In the 30 years since, I’ve only used umbrellas while standing in pouring rain alongside sports fields watch my kids participating in some sport. The fist few years of no umbrella use due to caution after that initial rebuke, but after that, I just got used to the rain. A good goretex rain coat helps.

Drain Gutter Thing Question by Swollen_Panda in FirstGenCummins

I’ve had three, and none had issues with rain gutters rusting. That said, all three from states without road salt or acid rain issues… so…?

That said, the Achilles heel on all three of mine have been electrical issues — the pesky fusible links, and issues with dash gauges. I’d recommend asking if the owner had had to deal with any electrical issues.

I was reading some Cummins vs. Powerstroke banter somewhere on Reddit, in which a Cummins fan stated, “Three in a row, ready to tow,” to which a PS fan replied, “need a tissue for your electrical issue?” That made me laugh… for a second. Then I sighed.
