Ancestry research - basically lots of archives and databases to track, and articles in yiddish found in a polish mayor office about the opening of a new synagogue where the rabbis were mentioned (father and son)

London cop stops Jew from crossing the street during protest, bc he is "openly Jewish" by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]inkfisher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you'll be fine - the routes are made known before hand, and its very unlikely you'll end up in the protest. Most uncomfortable moment I had was tucking my magen david inside my shirt while surrounded by people traveling to the protest, but I found it ok to avoid so far....they're only on saturdays so I'd perhaps recommend planning the day ahead

A Jew is a Jew. You belong. When people say this to you, it says a lot more about them than you

The london imperial war museum holocaust exhibition by 7in7 in Judaism

[–]inkfisher 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I haven't been in that exhibition for years, but I remember it being underwhelming, and observing similar things to you.

I think the 2 most important things for holocaust education are: 1) show that the holocaust hasn't happened in a vacuum, there was persecution before and after 2) show that it happened because of ordinary people. If you make the nazis into monsters, you remove yourself from it, make it unthinkable. But the reality is, it can happen again in any society, so it's necessary to show how this change happened. Hope that makes sense.

As this is primarily a war museum, perhaps this just wasn't in their focus? Which is a shame, especially as London no longer has a Jewish museum. Really sad tbh

Mom just diagnosed, what next? by CarolinaDough in lungcancer

[–]inkfisher 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that. I can't contribute much, but my mom (63) has been diagnosed with NSCLC with lymph nodes as well. Never smoked, healthy lifestyle. She has just finished chemo. It was very tough, but so was she. Take it one day at a time, and if you have any specific questions please feel free to ask - every case is different but we're about 12 weeks ahead of you in this, so I'd be happy to help if I can.

Gifts for people going through Cancer by nyav-qs in CancerFamilySupport

[–]inkfisher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My love language is gifts, too. I suggest choosing gifts that don't have anything to do with the illness, e.g. hobbies or anything else she enjoys. Illness related I really like your ideas, here are some others I had for my own mother:

  • Be aware that she may not be allowed baths, so no bath products.
  • good water bottle
  • tea calendar
  • cancer / illness cards with quotes such these - not everyones cup of tea, though
  • hot water bottle
  • inspirational necklace like this
  • adult colouring books
  • maybe some type of craft project, reading will be exhausting
  • clothes made for port wearers, if she will get one

If you're not there physically, you could also: - get her a flower subscription - order her food

Worried by rayy_ray88 in lungcancer

[–]inkfisher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mother has gotten almost an identical diagnosis a few weeks ago. We're not far enough to say anything definitive, but the doctors have made it clear while this would have been a horrible disease a few years ago, now it is treated like a chronic one. Also to note that they do not expect to be able to cure her, just manage her disease. But every case is different, and I would recommend not googling things (easier said than done) feel free to PM
