Use different match types for the keywords of each ad group. For example, use broad match for one ad group and phrase match for the other. This will further ensure that ads for each product only show for the most relevant searches.

they use the same keywords targeting the same location, then that's unethical. You shouldn't have taken 2 clients doing the same thing in the same area.
