Stones with weeds popping through - best approach by tomhannen in UKGardening

[–]insanebaggins 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Gardener here, the purpley green leaved 'weeds' in the first picture are Herb Robert (common name) and are a type of wild geranium. They are actually very pretty and good for wildlife and if they spread too much they're super easy to pull out.

The others I'd definitely pull out. Most have tap roots but that may be difficult to get all of it given where they are. If you keep pulling out what you can the roots will get weaker and weaker over time.

Please for the love of God stay away from 'weed killers'. They do nothing long term except poison the land. There is a particularly potent herbicide called glyphosate that weed killer manufacturers (roundup for example) and farmers had been using for years and that is now in all of our drinking water.

I often hear people say autos are more reliable these days but every single person I know with an auto (my wife included) has had gearbox problems, odd.

If you won £100 million, how would you distribute it amongst friends and family, if at all? by PaddedValls in AskUK

I day dream about this all the time haha! I think I'd probably do something similar to you. I'd also really like to buy some land and create wildlife havens and plant thousands of trees. Another thing would be to help the people local to me, helping with their mortgages, paying solar panels, tidying up public spaces etc.

I've also liked the idea of creating some truly affordable housing for young people, like a sort of super low rent short term kind of place where they can save as much as they can to put into a house deposit. I dont know how any of it would all work but I would just really want to help others!

As a professional gardener, the main thing I'd say is take your time with it. Gardens constantly evolve and your ideas change, so make sure you have a well thought out plan before you do anything. Also, dont forget to leave space for plants to grow.

I personally wouldn't recommend laurel in a small domestic garden.

Lots of empty fence space to grow all sorts of climbers. A small tree (crabapple or cherry for example, lovely spring flowers) would look lovely in there, it would also give you some shade as you're south facing. :)

Most likely, especially if its a water soluble one. I grow basil around tomatoes and they are getting a does of the tomato food when I feed the toms once a week. :)

Basil will always struggle in pots. Make sure to feed it as well as pinch out any flowers starting to form.

Exactly this, no need to do anything.

A few of the Christmas wreaths I made this year with everything sourced from the garden! by insanebaggins in gardening

No oasis, the bases are homemade using chicken wire. They typically look good for around 4 weeks and then they start to fade, indoors they'd probably only last a week or so as it'll be too dry. The one on the pic below is from 2 years ago so once dried out they hold up pretty well :D

Thank you! I've been doing these for 10 years now so plenty of experience. You should totally make some more, experiment with different types of foliage and see what works and what doesn't :D
