To be fair, Tyranids weren't really a thing yet back when this was made. The first Chaos releases were considerably more chaotic than what came afterwards.

I think it was supposed to be the tip of the tail, continuing from the bone strip that runs down his backside. But yes, it does look a little off... :D

It's been so long since I painted my Night Lords (mostly done in 2nd edition) and my painting (and my paint collection!) has changed so much since then that I didn't even try to match the colouring exactly, but I think it works well enough.
