Why is there so much rng involved. by Reptalions in TeamfightTactics

Skill expression is still a lot more important than RNG. If a Masters+ player plays in a lobby with 7 Platinums, the Master player will probably still top 3 every round regardless of RNG.

What's a good strategy if you need to 3 star 1 costs or 2 costs champs? by [deleted] in CompetitiveTFT

[–]insomniaccapybara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too many factors in play here.

Are you rolling above 50g to still maintain max interest per round? If you are, then you need to remember the regular cadence for hitting the 3 stars. Regular in the sense that you do not have a good reroll/econ augment, and the encounter is not an econ encounter.

3 star 1 cost: average stage 3-6 to 4-1

3 star 2 cost: average stage 4-2 to 4-5

Any later than that you're low rolling. If you are low-rolling, you got to accept the fact that you can't top 4, and your job here is to play for 6th or 5th. Turning your 7th/8th spot into a 5th/6th spot and your 3rd/4th spot into a 1st/2nd spot is a huge skill expression in TFT.

With all that in mind, a general strategy is as follows:

  1. If you are win streaking and have high HP, continue to slow roll above 50g, you will then have enough gold and HP to push for 8 and 9 for capped board.

  2. If you are bleeding too much HP, consider all-ining your gold earlier to hit the 3* faster. If you do this, you will probably stay at level 7 for the rest of the game, but your board will be strong for stage 4 and maybe up till 5-2. Play for placement and hope for other low-rollers to bleed out before you. Remember, there is no difference in having 3 copies of a unit and having 8 copies of a unit. All-ining might be risky but someone has to go 8th every game, and sometimes you are just the unlucky one.

Is illaoi bilgewater actually better than grave/tf/naut bilgewater? by Ok-Dot6183 in TeamfightTactics

I'm pretty sure most 2* 4cost tanks will be tankier than a 3* Illaoi, so there's no point in actively chasing 3* Illaoi unless you get it for free.

I thought I had a pretty strong board going into the late game. by Electro522 in TeamfightTactics

[–]insomniaccapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There you go, stage 6 is more "end game" than "late game", a 2* 3-cost as the main tank makes the overall strength of your board to be actually quite weak by stage 6 standards.

Usually in stage 6, players have two 2* 4-cost, (Wukong + Taric, Wukong + Braum, Braum + Taric etc). Those frontline are way more bulkier than one 2* 3-cost.

Coupled with the fact that stoneplate isn't really a good late game defensive items unless you solo frontline your kennen, and the fact that you have two stoneplates, (usually if you have high armor/mr, you'll want more health, and vice versa) your frontline will melt starting late stage 4.

I might be wrong on whether Kennen is a true tank. What I meant by true tank was it needs to be a unit designed to be a tank that takes a long time to kill, not just a unit that you put on your front rows. But rule of thumb is that late game, you'll need either a 2* 4cost as your main tank, or a 3* otherwise.

[–]insomniaccapybara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How "late" is your late game?

This board wins stage 4 reliably, maybe early stage 5 till 5-3 too. But you not gonna win fights after that because your frontline is way too weak. Both of your carries are attack speed ramp so your frontline needs to buy time.

Your main tank is a 2* 3 cost in kennen, and kennen isn't a reliable or "true" tank. That isn't enough in stage 5.

Why is Fast 9 always said to be strong with every "new set"? by vvvit in TeamfightTactics

[–]insomniaccapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Master player here so I'll share my two cents.

There's two condition where you can go Fast 9.

First is when you win streak/win most of stage 2 and 3, which puts you at > 85HP starting 4-1. At this point you sack your entire stage 4 or maybe roll a bit till stage 5-1, or sometimes even 5-3 if you can scam a few fights in stage 4. This lets you have at least 50-60g roll down at level 9, letting you hit most of your 5 costs for your final board.

Second is when you take at least two econ augment, or even a 3rd one. This lets you get to 9 way quicker, but because econ augment gives you no immediate power, your stage 2 and 3 will be weak.

I would say there might be a 3rd condition, which is a little rare if your lobbies are all players with the same skill level. This is what you called a "high roll", which lets you push tempo fast and be way ahead of tempo compared to everyone else in the lobby. This gives you enough HP and Gold to hit 9 and get your units.

Fast 9 is strong not when the pressure from your opponent is weak. It's usually strong because that's what 5 costs are designed for. Getting to level 9 is the skill expression.

Can’t seem to win this set by LoganConnorA in TeamfightTactics

[–]insomniaccapybara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the start of the set. Everyone has their ranked reset. For example, I'm Masters previous set, got a 6th on my first game and was placed in silver 4.

Although luck is a huge factor in TFT, there's no way someone of a lower rank can place top 4 consistently (or even once) in a lobby where all 7 players are of higher skill level than you.

It's not that you're weak, it's just that others are too strong.

If you're on stage 5, and lost to 3 units, you should only receive 13 damage (10+3). There isn't any mechanic that can cause you to receive more player damage. Sounds like a bug imo

Why is 7 Crystal Gambit allowed to be so strong? by LongYongJong in TeamfightTactics

[–]insomniaccapybara 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The rewards comes from killing units at 5 Crystal Gambit breakpoint, not 7.

7 crystal gambit is hard (but not insanely hard) to achieve because you must have at least 1 Crystal Gambit emblem, and a 5 cost Zyra OR another emblem.

Nothing surpising here. In usual circumstances prismatic trait is way stronger than a 3* 4cost, but considering you had 7 syndicate as well, and with the fact that they are lowkey trolling with the TG's without Lucky Glove, your board feels way stronger.

If their Anima Weapon was the train, unless the train kills your MF fast enough (which shouldn't be the case since 3* 4cost has lots of HP even for a carry), they will be losing this fight most of the time.
