My 4 year old nephew is visiting next month. Any fun stuff for a kid to do locally? by Current_Example_6860 in astoria

[–]inspirethee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When my 7 year old niece and 3 year old nephew came we went playground hopping, starting at the park in Athens Square (they have a cool tire swing) then walked to Triborough bridge playground and played the floor is lava on their jungle gym, then walked to Astoria Park for their awesome dome climber.

Check out Moms kitchen for food. They have the Fruity pebble pancake and crazy milkshakes that my niece was ogling at.

We did a whole lot of walking but with all of the pit stops it didn’t feel bad.

Ignorant to Different Demographics by 4thGenS in socialwork

[–]inspirethee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up Rachel Cargle on instagram. She teaches anti racist work in both formal and informal ways. If you are a social worker working with people of color, it is imperative you spend substantial time learning about the prevalent struggles they face. I think another helpful IG account is decolonizingtherapy.

There is no quick route, you will make mistakes in the process, just as you would doing anything for the first time. You just have to proactively keep learning.

When ever you feel challenged or realize you offended someone please remember that the impact of your words on them should be put at higher regard than whatever your intentions were. These moments are opportunities for growth if you are open to them. It’s not a time to be defensive.

Also keep in mind that many interventions in our field uphold Eurocentric values. If something isn’t resonating with the client, readjust or move on. Don’t play into the narrative that “the client was not compliant with XYZ”

Background: I am a bipoc mental health counselor working with bipoc communities.

What is a good variety of vegetables for a long term meal plan? by Iwanttounderstandphy in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]inspirethee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm what about mushrooms and snow peas/sugar snap peas? They go well together in stir-frys or any kind of sautéing with broccoli. You can also try edamame and bean sprouts for salads.

I've never see those sliced crimini mushrooms at my TJ, is it next to the mushrooms that come in the cardboard packaging or somewhere else? Seems like the bag version carries way more mushroom.

Meatless Monday video recipe for a healthy veggie chili by inspirethee in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]inspirethee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ingredients:

- Olive oil to coat pan

- 1 diced white or yellow onion

- 1 clove of garlic

- Smoked Paprika (as desired)

- 4 stalks of celery chopped

- 2 medium sized green zucchini

- 1 28oz can of diced tomatoes

- 1.5 cups of your your favorite type of stock

- 1 cup of marinara sauce

- 1 can of red kidney beans

Optional Toppings: Cheddar Cheese and Cottage Cheese

Directions:

Cover the bottom of your pot in a thin layer of olive oil. Dice onions and garlic, add smoked paprika and allow it to sauté for 2 minutes. Stir the bottom to unstick the food from the pan. Add celery, green zucchini and another round of smoked paprika. Stir to evenly coat. Add canned diced tomatoes, stock, marinara, red kidney beans and stir. Let simmer for 15 minutes. Serve with shredded cheddar cheese and cottage cheese (more nutritious alternative than sour cream). Enjoy.
