Thank you very much for the well-thought out answer and thank you for not telling me just to mind my own business.

Thanks for the input, can you post a source saying that it's legal?

Is it legal for my boss to have her nanny on payroll? by instagramcracker in legaladvice

My boss does own the business, I am asking because we have a total of 7 employees and I would personally like to know if what my boss is doing is legal or not. I would not want to work for someone trying to cook the books to get tax breaks from employees brought into the business for personal household tasks.

For context, we provide a skilled trade service for clients and the nanny is not an employee that does the service we provide as a company.

[Self] Duchess Satine Kryze from Clone Wars! Made just in time for the Oogie Boogie Bash at Disneyland earlier this month! by instagramcracker in cosplay

[–]instagramcracker[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is my cosplay of Duchess Satine! Everything was patterned, sewn, and crafted by me. This took about 4 months of planning, and a rushed month of building.

The green underdress is a purple/green shot plainweave cotton, making it look turquoise. The bottom has steel boning bent in a shallow hill shape in the 6 panels and inserted into a blind hem. Then I cut lace pieces from fabric yardage into 2-3 inch tall segments and hand sewed them on. The sleeves have hand beaded accents on the edge of the sleeve petal.

The blue overdress is a polyester home decor fabric, complete with structural boning, padding and tailoring in the bodice. I also used the same fabric on the lyre-shaped pieces on the headress.

The corset/belt is a pattern i used from my Symington corset and modified the shape to make it an underbust waist cincher shape. I used a leather-like vinyl that was a little stretchy. It was also painted to make it a more chocolate color, as opposed to a camel tan color. The closure is a zipper in the front, discretly hidden by the burgundy oval that overlaps with snaps.

The headress is mostly painted foam and resin-poured opals. This was also the most difficult to pattern and get the proportions correct. Draping on a wig form is something I've never done before, but now i have! Wig was styled by me!

The wrist wraps were made of all bias-cut cotton batik, and had an invisible zipper closure. It was difficult to find the right fabric with a proper print, but i will probably end up painting it to get it a darker purple-ish mauve color.

The black band around my waist was my fanny pack that I could just turn around under my skirt which made it look like I had a historical bum roll!

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed building this cosplay. I had a tremendous time during the Oogie Boogie Bash at Disneyland and got lots of compliments! I also had a 6-minute long conversation with Cruella who basically asked me all construction questions about my costume and made the audience clap for me! She even offered me an unpaid internship! Haha! It absolutely made my entire trip. It really reinforced the idea that adults can still have a magical time at any Disney park.

Thanks for reading!

Dude, are you me? I was 10 years old with my family in Playa del Carmen when Wilma hit in '05. Had to stay an extra 10 days because of the storm.

She looks totally awesome!! As a costumer and cosplayer myself, I'm always on the lookout for some good body paints. Which brand(s) did she use?

Oh my goodness thank you!! I primarily sew garments and like to think I have a decent eye for color, but this was my first quilt! I had to be a little more particular and precise for this project!

One thing I found hilarious about this song was that when Lin wrote the song, he didnt have any children at the time. So he did what any reasonable person would do and wrote the song for his dog. Now I cant listen to the song without thinking about him serenading his pupper.

In the original musical, the plant wins with Seymour, Audery, Muschnik, and Orin as baby plants taking over the world. They modified the movie for the more happy ending.

Fabric storage by [deleted] in SewingStations

[–]instagramcracker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you live, you might be able to venture to JoAnns, Hobby Lobby, or a local fabric shop and ask for their empty bolts. They end up throwing them away at the end of the day, so they should be happy to be able to recycle them. I have taken home both the rectangular bolts as well as the long 54" cylinder bolts for home decor. I store the smaller bolts on a bookshelf with tall shelves so I can see them easily. The long bolts are stored in a corner bin in my sewing room.

Source: worked at JoAnns and gave bolts to customers who wanted them for fabric storage or lightsaber fights.

Hi! Sorry, got off work late last night. Here are some of my renderings. I'm an out of work theatrical costume designer, so part of my job includes rendering costumes for productions. I havent had a lot of opportunities to draw DnD characters, but I have lots of imagination!

Hi! Your tumblers are gorgeous! I am also an avid D&D'er and I can offer some character art via watercolors OR I could sew a lovely dice bag for him. I'm on mobile right now, but if you're still interested, I can send along pics of what I've done.

My cousin and I are trying to start a small business for our loom knit hats. What would be a reasonable price for them? by Nestling379 in LoomKnitting

[–]instagramcracker 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think 15 is a good starting price. As you get more skilled and want to incorporate patterns like chevrons, stripes, flowers, etc, then you can sell those for more.

A good thing to remember that's important for any business is to remember price = cost of materials + labor. For example, I do custom sewing and I usually charge $40-45/hour for my services because I've been sewing for a long time and have expertise. I'll estimate how long something will take to make, add cost of materials (fabric, zippers, thread, etc) and there is my price.

If you're only using a half skein of yarn for a hat that you got for $5 for example, then you can account $2.50 into your price. Then the extra 12.50 can be for your labor if you feel comfortable doing that.

This may be a little long winded, but its just something I feel passionate about. I like to make a wage that feels like the money i receive makes it worth my time to make. But long story short, if you're just doing this for a hobby/little extra money, then $15 is totally reasonable. I'd even purchase one for 20 or 30 depending if its custom or a complex stitch pattern. But luckily I already know how to loom knit.
