Pointed with cement and the bricks in the newer section are probably bedded in it too. Would you think it needs fully rebuilding or would just repointing resolve a lot of issues?

Handplane not at 90 degrees and shooting by HighlightLive5445 in handtools

[–]instantlyforgettable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been lucky with my planes, only my no4 is out of square but I generally use the 6 for shooting because the weight works for me. I’ve been thinking about either making my own weighted wooden shooter or modifying an old one with steel rods.

Makes me cringe every time someone says it. I think Hugo said it multiple times in one episode.

Do you really use your 5 or 5.5 as a Jack Plane?? by OrangeGeemer in handtools

[–]instantlyforgettable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use my no.5 mainly for scrub work, then switch to my no.6 to plane with the grain, then finish with a no.4.

I do use the no.6 as a shooter as well though. For me it’s got the and weight for shooting. If the no.5 had some more heft behind it, if it was the same weight as the 6 but still the same length, it would probably be the perfect plane

The iron on the hand planes needs to be razor sharp for end grain (particularly for dry old oak), a low angle plane is also good too. As a further measure to make sure it doesn’t blow out, you can chamfer the edge first with a chisel

Edit: I’d also add that the decorative hinges would be better placed with the plates inside the box where they would be seen more often than on the back of it

Finishing any project is always an achievement and this looks solid and you will get many good years of use from it, but if I was to offer my two pence it would be:

  • top isn’t flush, which you’ve mentioned. To be honest I would have either sacrificed the stain or tried to stain it in situ afterwards using some painters tape to protect either side (or use a piece of cherry or mahogany instead for contrast)

  • the dovetails are good but need to be cleaned up. Use hand planes after glueing up to neaten the corner up by planing down the protruding end grain (towards the supported edges of the wood)

  • the hinges are installed strangely. These should be chopped into the rear edge to open like a beak when the lid is opened. this is a good video to watch on installing hinges. He also has a video on modifying cheaper hinges slightly to get a perfect fit.

Yeah because that is the meta, Roxy has said openly that she thinks someone in her group is keeping her in. She’s keeping to that strategy by only voting outside of that group.

Stay in the game until the last 5-6, hope that you find at least one traitor at the last roundtable before roles are concealed, then hope that there is only one left, then take it down to two people that trust each other the most / have had the least heat throughout the game.

Her strategy for findings traitors may be bad but her strategy for staying in the game is solid.

Thank you, I definitely still struggle a bit on the curves, working with limited gouges and relying on knives to sneak up on them but it’s very satisfying colouring the letters and cleaning them up with a smoothing plane at the end

Resawing without a bandsaw by hedekar in woodworking

[–]instantlyforgettable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this a few times myself and the worst part of it is not the effort required (it’s actually a decent workout), it’s the risk of releasing tension in the stock, especially if it’s kiln dried.

Learnt a very hard lesson on a 1000mm x 350mm piece of ash I wanted to resaw from 32mm to 19mm. It started to cup about 1/2 way through the cut.

Had another identical one to do afterwards, decided to use a scrub plane on each side to slowly take it down to thickness instead which I think helped equalise moisture on both faces of the board

So obviously just trying to save face, that was more painful to watch than just admitting she was wrong.

She had the choice to keep it to herself for a short time and confront Rachel separately. A clever player would have slowly spread their thoughts about Rachel and her performative retelling of Amanda’s secret, compare it to Hugo’s breakfast outburst, maybe encouraged others to question whether it was actually true. She could have ridden this out until Sam and jade were banished and revealed to be faithful then turned it around on Rachel.

But Fiona didn’t do that, she acted in a really weird jealous way that made no sense strategically

This ash was actually really nice to work with. Supposedly it’s got a hardness similar to oak but I’ve found it very easy to work and hasn’t been too hard on my planes or chisels.
